Society is a 2.1/2.2 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted by Neomarbilan, verified by wPopoff on 20 June 2026.<ref name="Verification">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CoEaH1CM7o</ref> It is the second instalment of the Pathetic Trilogy and the sequel to Escalator. Like its predecessor, its gameplay is inspired by Slaughterhouse, and its design draws on the dreamcore/weirdcore aesthetic, incorporates many internet horror references, and explores themes of mental instability and substance abuse.

Society was rated on 23 June 2026 and placed at #1 on the Demonlist the next day, dethroning Thinking Space II's nine-month reign; it was surpassed by GRIEF on 5 October 2026.

A sequel to Society, Shuttered, is in the works.

History

Society was initially created as a humanly impossible sequel to Escalator, which was itself considered harder than any completed level at the time. Neomarbilan released the first preview of the level on 7 December 2023, showcasing the layout of the first half, right before Update 2.2.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE1lSQ4_4xk</ref> Neomarbilan uploaded a second preview on 9 March 2025, with a revamped layout and several decorated parts, incorporating 2.2 features.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp4p3mVk5EI</ref> The finished, unnerfed version of the level was showcased on 20 October 2025.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s-NBTRzspE</ref> Demand for a humanly possible version led to a balance update that nerfed the level to an estimated Top 5 difficulty. This version of the level was showcased on 10 February 2026, with wPopoff set to verify it.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTQ7ojWfHP0</ref>

On 8 April 2026, wPopoff began streaming his Society verification. He made steady progress over the next few weeks, making many buffs and completing it in three runs on 21 April 2026 and two runs on 25 April 2026. He continued to make consistent progress on the level despite buffing it to Top 1 difficulty until he achieved 63% (wPopoff's copy uses different percentages) on 11 May 2026, after which he would not achieve a new best until 8 June 2026, when he achieved a best run of 67%, followed by a 15-100% run on 12 June and a best of 72% on 13 June. During his stream on 20 June 2026, wPopoff achieved a new best of 73% before later verifying the level.<ref name="Verification" />

Description

Note: Neomarbilan, Tusol, Ashirymafik, and Ex3r0 made the gameplay. Only the decorators will be listed.

  • 0%: Before the gameplay section is a 1.5-second cutscene depicting a girl named Ruru in a dark corridor with little light and an eye at the end of the corridor.
  • 0-16% (Tusol): Society begins with a cube sequence in a dark area with a rainbow vortex-looking background and an abundance of black fog that randomly scatters to obscure the screen. Ruru also appears, saying, 'What is this? Am I sleeping? ... Oh I see how it is. Okiee...' The player must navigate tight spike structures and carefully use the orbs and gravity portals to pass. Towards the end of this sequence, it transitions into a hand-drawn-like segment. It requires timing a green orb and hitting a dash orb that travels through a drawn door into a split cutscene of an office with a digital clock reading 7 o'clock, with a bleep from the song signalling the next sequence.
  • 16-24% (Aleph): This sequence features a tight ship corridor, with another bleep from the song at around 20-21%, where a creepy-looking face briefly appears as a glitch. The block design in this part starts mostly black-and-white, with some rainbow colouring, then transitions into a dark section with various hanging, chain-like decorations.
  • 24-33% (IL1ghtly0ne): This sequence consists of UFO gameplay with various orbs and slopes. Here, the decoration becomes more colourful, with flashing colours and blinking eyes. After another bleep, a cutscene saying 'NO SIGNAL' appears, and the level turns completely black-and-white as the song slows and transitions into the next sequence.
  • 33-49% (EXXXZOR): This part is considered one of the most unnerving in the level. It includes many blinking eyes, text that says 'Love', 'Ruru, can you hear me?', 'I haven't seen you outside in a while', and 'I got to go now, hope your alright.' There are many more texts too difficult to decipher. The decoration features various creepy faces and creatures. The gameplay consists of tough cube and orb timings. At 47%, the song slows slightly, and a collage-style title card appears, transitioning into the next sequence.
  • 49-65% (SunFl0werBoy): The drop of the level features fast-paced gameplay involving the wave primarily, with small sequences of the ship and the UFO. The decoration constantly fluctuates between creepy hand-drawn-like segments and segments with various colours flashing, mostly blue and purple, and occasionally red. This section ends with a wave sequence and a brief cutscene of a confused-looking face scribbled over the gameplay.
  • 65-74% (Tusol): This part begins with UFO and wave gameplay, and the decoration becomes brighter and more disorienting. This part features a lot of text, most notably 'you_couldn't_save_him'. At 73%, a cutscene depicting a sad Ruru in a city appears, leading into the next sequence.
  • 74-82% (SunFl0werBoy): This part picks up decoration from the last cutscene, with block design resembling city buildings. These constantly alternate with decoration consisting of many blinking eyes. This part consists mostly of the ship and the wave, with a brief ball sequence. It ends with tight wave spam with extremely bright decoration and blinking eyes.
  • 82-99% (undercooked waffle): The final part of the level, consisting of cube gameplay that is mostly memory, as it contains many fake spikes and blocks.
  • 99-100% (MattsNibbles, End Screen): After a distortion cutscene is the end screen depicting Ruru sitting on a bench near a park, with various buildings visible, like 'Nate's Hotel' (referencing dj-Nate), and 'Cave of Ice' (referencing icedcave). The end screen displays the credits for some time, and then ends with a title card.

Controversies

The verification and release of Society triggered a chain of significant events that rocked the Geometry Dash community.

Zoink's pre-practice and Top 1 status

wPopoff verified Society on 20 June, and one day later, Zoink, after tweeting 'I'll take a crack at it'<ref>https://x.com/gdzoink/status/2068586650372870148</ref> and seemingly without congratulating wPopoff, began his first stream of Society and immediately got runs of 33% (23% with the old percentage) and a 7-death noclip run.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zNzAwnQfWY</ref> This rapid progress, seemingly out of nowhere, led many to speculate that Society either was not the Top 1 level or that Zoink was using some way to make his progress on the level look much faster than it actually was, thus either making himself seem better at the game or making the level seem much easier than Top 1 difficulty, starting a broad drama in the community.

The backlash that followed led Neomarbilan to believe he had been pre-practising the level for some time.<ref>https://x.com/neomarbilan/status/2068763334262800447</ref> Zoink later admitted to having 17 hours of pre-practice on a harder version of the level (unclear which version it is),<ref>https://x.com/HamiltonHqmy/status/2068797921513099285</ref> and on his second stream, he would place '17 hours of prepractice' beside his facecam. That same stream, he got Society in two runs: 74% and 65-100%.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsJU2pQcfRQ</ref>

While Zoink never explicitly said that Society was not Top 1, his refusal to acknowledge the prior practice on the level, and the resulting perceptions about its difficulty led to criticism and allegations of him attempting to minimise wPopoff's accomplishment, along with some comparisons with wPopoff's behaviour when Thinking Space II was verified (namely stating that no-CBF (Click Between Frames) Amethyst, which he verified, was much harder than CBF Thinking Space II, which was on the list). Society would end up placing at #1 regardless, as Zoink requested that his opinion not be counted, citing his own unreliability.

Shortly after the verification of Society, many people who uploaded showcases of the level were subject to copyright requests from pathetic240px, the artist who created the original music track.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/geometrydash/comments/1uioco7/just_a_reminder_to_never_upload_anything_with/</ref> Pathetic, a long-standing critic of large-scale communities, has expressed a desire not to be credited in Geometry Dash videos, citing the diversion of internet traffic from his music to the game's content. They would begin removing content they considered 'low-quality' or 'repetitive', with the most prominent instance being a strike against Nexus (despite using the HelliXScream remix).<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/geometrydash/comments/1uc0qib/not_even_nexus_is_spared_from_getting_copyright/</ref>

Nexus's showcase would be reinstated shortly after, as Pathetic came to a compromise with level creators: if their music is to be used in a Geometry Dash level, three guidelines must be followed:<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/geometrydash/comments/1uf37k0/update_on_the_society_copyright_situation/</ref><ref>https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxxArI1xnD-ONUXMixHa_wGllR84uqt1OH</ref>

  1. Pathetic is not publicly credited or associated with the community in any way.
  2. Levels may not share a name with the song(s) they use.
  3. There should not be a ubiquitous number of showcases of levels using Pathetic's music.

Trivia

  • Society uses one song and five sound effects (SFXs).
  • Society was rated on 23 June 2026 and placed at #1 on the Demonlist the next day, ending Thinking Space II's reign at the top of nine months and five days.
    • This addition pushed Decks Dark into the Extended List and Axinie into the Legacy List.
    • RobTop joined one of Trick's Thinking Space II live streams after receiving a Twitch subscription, and Zoink requested The Bloop to be rated, with the chat requesting Society to be rated as well.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViX1pY2gio8</ref>
    • Society is the first Top 1 level to utilise 2.2 features.
      • Society is also the first Top 1 level to be verified with CBF.
    • Society is regarded as the 46th instance of the hardest-rated level in the game's history.
  • Society was playtested by teraaa, Mizukii, Viwi, Noctal, Mariner, Liam-V4, VivisectionGD, swiborg, and Taiago, with additional assistance from ReyRU, yp_real, Elinex, penek, VivisectionGD, and meepr.
  • During wPopoff's verification, the percentages used include the full length of the level, which includes the end screen. However, in the unnerfed version, the level's length excludes the end screen, meaning it reaches 100% at the end of the gameplay.
    • The length of the unnerfed version persisted even after Neomarbilan updated the level to the verified version.
  • Before the main unnerfed version was decorated and released, the first ever layout of Society was significantly harder. After Society was verified and released, Neomarbilan combined this old layout with the level's existing decoration to create a 'true unnerfed' version, with an ID of 144702527.
  • There are hidden messages beneath the level at the start: 'Hi', 'My name is Tusol and I hate Neomarbilan', and 'This is my hog, go ahead and look at him', with the hog displayed below the text.
  • There is a rare chance to get a secret death scene after respawning.
  • After crashing 10 times, Ruru's monologue text box disappears.
  • At 13%, just before transitioning into the next segment of the cube sequence, performing an additional jump will reveal an Easter egg of Neomarbilan's current icon (which references Senko-san from the manga and anime series The Helpful Fox Senko-san) with a meow sound effect.
  • Crashing at any point between 74-99% will reveal an animation of a heart rate monitor initially displaying a normal waveform with auditory heartbeats and the monitor beeping before turning into a flatline with a long beep, possibly signalling death from psychological illness.
  • Several references can be found in the level's end screen:
  • Neomarbilan made an update to Society after its verification by changing the design of Ruru, located at the end screen.
  • There was a level named BaD LeveL by NotNightmare that was stolen from the original level, KIchI by Ph0o0o, and it was rated. The NotNightmare account owner gave it to someone else, who replaced BaD LeveL with Society. As a result, the level temporarily became the hardest 5-star level in the game. The level data was transferred over to KIchI.
  • Before wPopoff uploaded his verification video, Society was moved to the Legacy List exactly at #420 on the Demonlist, being named 'Ohio' and being verified by the person 'ohio'.
