Amethyst (formerly known as The Amethyst) is a 2.1/2.2 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted by Mist, verified by wPopoff on 25 May 2025.[1] The level takes the theme of a crystal cave, with decorations such as rocks, geodes, and purple and pink crystals, which resemble amethysts. Its gameplay and visuals are inspired by The Golden, featuring incredibly tight ship-traversal spaces, precise timing, and highly challenging wave sequences with gravity and size-altering portals.
Amethyst was rated on 4 June 2025 and placed at #1 on the Demonlist, surpassing Tidal Wave. It would remain at that position until 19 September 2025, when Thinking Space II was placed at #1 above Amethyst, ending Amethyst's reign at #1 after three and a half months.
History
On 4 July 2020, Mist showcased the layout for Amethyst.[2] The level was originally projected to be Top 5.
Mist uploaded the first decoration preview for Amethyst on 26 June 2021.[3] Much of the gameplay in this preview had been revamped from the original layout and had decent progress in decoration. Beastular was assigned to be the level's verifier after Sid125 dropped it.[4]
Mist uploaded the second decoration preview on 27 October 2022.[5] This preview featured decoration for all but two parts of the level.
On 13 January 2023, Mist announced the official Amethyst Creator Contest for one of the undecorated parts of the level.[6] The winner would get their decoration in the final level as well as other special rewards. Contest entries were due by 7 April.
On 18 April 2023, the results for the Amethyst Creator Contest were uploaded.[7] A creator known as Echo won the contest and got their decoration in the final level.
On 15 October 2023, Mist uploaded the full level showcase for Amethyst.[8] Another showcase was uploaded on 15 March 2024, featuring several buffs made by Beastular in an effort to keep the level at Top 1 difficulty.[9]
In 2024, Beastular announced that he was no longer verifying Amethyst, as he lacked the motivation or patience to continue playing it at its current difficulty and was also dealing with waning interest in the game overall.[10]
The verification was then passed to Trick.[11] On 11 November 2024, Trick got a record of 61% on the level.[12]
On 12 February 2025, Trick announced that he would be retiring from the game to focus on his personal endeavours, dropping Amethyst in the process.[13] It was subsequently announced that WPopoff would be the new verifier of the level.
wPopoff immediately got progress on the level, getting 61% and 47% on a buffed version of the level by 28 February 2025.[14] On 25 March, wPopoff would get 71%, the highest by any verifier thus far.[15] On 3 May, wPopoff got 77%, which was approximately 94% of the level's overall gameplay.[16]
On 25 May 2025, wPopoff would finally verify Amethyst after around 115,000 attempts.[17][18] The level would be very quickly uploaded onto the servers.
Amethyst was featured by RobTop on 3 June 2025 and was placed at #1 on the Demon List the same day.
Description
- 0-10% (ivashka): Similarly to The Golden, Amethyst begins with a UFO section containing orbs, portals and tight timings. Hordes of crystals and rocky structures act as obstacles, forming the tight spaces that the player must pass through. Following this is a tricky ball section before another UFO part.
- 10-21% (NoobyPro + MinAY): The song becomes tense, preparing for the drop as the player becomes a ship and must pass through tight areas with orbs, size changes and gravity portals. Following this is a cube section where the player must hit some orbs. Each time this happens, the player will briefly become dual. This part ends with a title card, signalling the drop.
- 21-36% (BeClan + titoalper + Bedrock + roselyna): The player gets thrown into a fast wave section requiring tricky timing to pass through the tight gaps at a rapid speed, followed by a UFO section. Gravity and size portals scatter throughout, and the colour palette used here is primarily purple. A flash of light transitions the player to the next part, which features a colour palette of blue, pink, and purple, with gameplay consisting of another fast wave section that combines size and gravity changes with tight gaps that require precise timing.
- 36-52% (Echo): The player becomes a ship and maintains the fast speed. This ship part features size and gravity changes, a few teleportation portals, and orbs, followed by a challenging section that requires the player to transition quickly between the wave and the cube. A dual-wave section and a ball section then follow this.
- 52-68% (GamerKnight750 + Uriun): The gameplay slows down as the player must pass through a difficult robot part. The part after this is a tight UFO section with a very brief dual in between, followed by a spider part with the last input turning the player into a cube as they transition into a slow yet tight ship section containing gravity portals, size changes, some orbs to hit, and other orbs to avoid hitting. Afterwards is a UFO section with a dual segment in between, requiring only a few inputs, followed by another ship section with a similar gameplay style to the earlier one. At the end of this part, the player enters a cube portal, and a purple light emerges from it as it flies to the right, then emits a flash that covers the whole screen, acting as a transition to the next section.
- 68-81% (ADrone): The final part is a fast wave section with varying portals scattered throughout, slowing down into a UFO section and slowing down even more before a ball and another UFO section. At the end, the screen flashes white, then displays the end screen.
- 81-100% (Snom, End Screen): The end screen starts with the scenery of a purple crystal cave consisting of some waterfalls pouring down from the ceiling. The text here is made out of purple crystals. The level's title first appears and starts crediting the creators from here, beginning with the host (Mist), then the end art artist (Snom), before rocks fall from the ceiling, covering the screen, as a crack showing light appears and flashes. During this, the level's title appears again in front of a pink crystal, as the verifier, layout and optimisation creators are credited below, followed by the decorators. After this, the end art artist is credited once again before the credits disappear, leaving only the title and the pink crystal, as the level ends.
Gameplay
CBF controversy
The first click in Amethyst, a 240FPS frame-perfect timing, was made by wPopoff to improperly align if the player is using the Click Between Frames (CBF) mod, making it nearly impossible. On 13 July 2025, wPopoff re-verified Amethyst to update the 'CBF Blocker' to be truly physically impossible, citing that he did not want achievements of Amethyst's difficulty to be 'overshadowed [by] a CBF victor'.[19]
The CBF blocker received significant backlash from users on Twitter, including from top player Zoink, who stated that the level was already challenging enough with the first CBF blocker and that this update was unnecessary.[20] Other users speculate that wPopoff re-verified the level out of spite after Zoink allegedly said the level was 'barely harder than Tidal Wave'. Zoink himself received criticism, with community members pointing out his own involvement with CBF blockers in other Extreme Demons, most notably Nullscapes.[21]
Soon after wPopoff verified the update, and before Mist published the update, the Demonlist staff made a rule change allowing the removal of CBF blockers added in update verifications in list completions, likely in direct response to wPopoff's update verification of Amethyst with a full CBF blocker; Zoink later beat the level using CBF, becoming its first victor.

Trivia
- Amethyst was rated on 4 June 2025 and placed at #1 on the Demonlist the same day, dethroning Tidal Wave.
- This addition pushed The Paroxysm of Rage into the Extended List and LD50 into the Legacy List.
- Amethyst is regarded as the 42nd instance of the hardest rated level in the game's history.
- Amethyst was coincidentally verified on the same day when Thinking Space II was verified, and Firework was beaten on mobile.
- Amethyst, along with Avernus, are both highly inspired by The Golden. Avernus portrays itself as an 'antagonist', while Amethyst is just heavily inspired by the level.
- Amethyst, Avernus, and The Golden are also former Top 1 levels.
- Additionally, Amethyst is part of the player-made 'GRP trilogy', along with these two levels.[24]
- Amethyst was initially set to be verified by Beastular, but it was passed to Trick, who, after achieving 61%, dropped the level due to initially quitting top Extreme Demons.[25] Ultimately, wPopoff became the next and final verifier, buffing the level.
- About half an hour after Amethyst was rated, it received enough player votes to downgrade it from Extreme Demon to Insane Demon. It was reverted to Extreme Demon an hour later.
- Amethyst is impossible to beat on 60FPS and 120FPS, as even the first click in the level requires an FPS higher than 120.
- SerVax believes that 25-100% is harder than Tidal Wave, and 61% most likely as well.
- Interestingly, the beginning of Amethyst is said to be the hardest part of the level.
- On 16 June 2025, Zoink began streaming progress on the level. In the version without the CBF blocker, he achieved 80% and 28-100%. On 1 August 2025, after 45,717 attempts and a furthest fail at 80% (98% if not counting the end screen), Zoink beat the level using CBF, becoming its first victor.[26]
- Amethyst and Thinking Space II were placed at #1 and #2 respectively on the Global Demonlist site on 25 May 2025.[27]
- On 1 August 2025, Amethyst was moved below Thinking Space II, leading to a minor controversy.
