Amethyst (formerly known as The Amethyst) is a 2.1/2.2 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted by Mist and verified by wPopoff on 25 May 2025.[1] The level, inspired by The Golden, takes the theme of an amethyst/crystal cave and uses a colour palette of blue, pink, purple and red.

Amethyst was rated on 4 June 2025 and placed at #1 on the Demonlist, surpassing Tidal Wave and becoming the current hardest-rated level in Geometry Dash.

Gameplay

  • 0-10% (ivashka): Similarly to The Golden, Amethyst begins with a UFO section containing orbs, portals and tight timings. Hordes of crystals and rocky structures act as obstacles, forming the tight spaces that the player must pass through. Following this is a tricky ball section before another UFO part.
  • 10-21% (NoobyPro + MinAY): The song becomes tense, preparing for the drop as the player becomes a ship and must pass through tight areas with orbs, size changes and gravity portals. Following this is a cube section where the player must hit some orbs. Each time this happens, the player will briefly become dual. This part ends with a title screen for the level, signalling the drop.
  • 21-36% (BeClan + titoalper + Bedrock + roselyna): The player gets thrown into a fast wave section requiring difficult timing to pass through the tight gaps at a fast speed, followed by a UFO section. Gravity and size portals scatter throughout, and the colour palette used here is primarily purple. A flash of light transitions the player into the next part, which features a colour palette of blue, pink, and purple, with gameplay consisting of another fast wave section that combines size and gravity changes with tight gaps requiring precise timing.
  • 36-52% (Echo): The player becomes a ship and maintains the fast speed. This ship part consists of size and gravity changes, a few teleportation portals, and orbs, followed by a tricky section that requires the player to transition quickly between the wave and cube. A dual-wave section and a ball section then follow this.
  • 52-68% (GamerKnight750 + Uriun): The gameplay slows down as the player must pass through a difficult robot part. The part after this is a tight UFO section with a very brief dual in between, followed by a spider part with the last input turning the player into a cube as they transition into a slow yet tight ship section containing gravity portals, size changes, some orbs to hit, and other orbs to avoid hitting. Afterwards is a UFO section with a dual segment in between, requiring only a few inputs before another ship section sharing a similar style of gameplay to the one earlier. At the end of this part, the player enters a cube portal, followed by a purple light emerging from it as it flies to the right and emits a flash of light that covers the whole screen, acting as a transition to the next section.
  • 68-81% (ADrone): The final part is a fast wave section with varying portals scattered throughout, slowing down into a UFO section and slowing down even more before a ball and another UFO section. At the end, the screen flashes white and then displays the end-screen.
  • 81-100% (Snom, End-Screen): The end-screen starts with the scenery of a purple crystal cave consisting of some waterfalls pouring down from the ceiling. The text here is made out of purple crystals. The level's title first appears and starts crediting the creators from here, beginning with the host (Mist), then the end art artist (Snom), before rocks can be seen falling from the ceiling, covering the screen as a crack showing light appears and flashes. During this, the level's title appears again in front of a pink crystal, as the verifier, layout and optimisation creators are credited below, followed by the decorators. After this, the end art artist is credited once again before the credits disappear, leaving only the title and the pink crystal, as the level ends.

CBF Controversy

The first click in Amethyst, a 240 FPS frame-perfect timing, was made by wPopoff to improperly align if the player is using the Click Between Frames mod, making it nearly impossible. On 13 July 2025, wPopoff re-verified Amethyst to update the 'CBF Blocker' to be truly physically impossible, citing that he did not want achievements of Amethyst's difficulty to be 'overshadowed [by] a CBF victor'.[2]

The CBF blocker received significant backlash from users on X (formerly Twitter), including from top player Zoink, who stated that the level was already challenging enough with the first CBF blocker and that this update was unnecessary.[3] Other users speculate that wPopoff re-verified the level out of spite after Zoink allegedly said the level was 'barely harder than Tidal Wave'. Zoink himself received criticism, with community members pointing out his own involvement with CBF blockers in other Extreme Demons, most notably Nullscapes.[4]

Soon after wPopoff verified the update, and before Mist published the update, the Demonlist staff made a rule change allowing the removal of CBF blockers added in update verifications in list completions, likely in direct response to wPopoff's update verification of Amethyst with a full CBF blocker; Zoink later beat the level using CBF, becoming its first victor.

Trivia

  • Amethyst was rated on 4 June 2025 and was placed at #1 on the Demonlist the same day, dethroning Tidal Wave.
    • This addition pushed The Paroxysm of Rage into the Extended List and LD50 into the Legacy List.
  • Amethyst currently has the lowest list percentage requirement of any level on the Demonlist.
  • Amethyst, along with Avernus are both based on The Golden.
  • Amethyst was initially set to be verified by Beastular, but it was passed to Trick, who, after achieving 61%, dropped the level due to initially quitting top Extreme Demons.[5] Ultimately, wPopoff became the next and final verifier.
  • Amethyst was coincidentally verified on the same day as another top-level, Thinking Space II, which was verified by Zoink.
  • About half an hour after Amethyst was rated, it received enough player votes to downgrade it from Extreme Demon to Insane Demon. It was reverted to Extreme Demon an hour later.
  • Amethyst contains roughly 143 60FPS frame perfects, 13 120FPS frame perfects, and 2 240FPS frame perfects. Worth noting, Amethyst is impossible to beat on 60FPS and 120FPS.
  • Amethyst was in development for over five years.
  • On 16 June 2025, Zoink began streaming progress on the level. On the version without the CBF blocker, he managed to achieve 80% and 28-100%. On 1 August 2025, after 45,717 attempts and a furthest crash at 80% (98% if not counting the endscreen), Zoink beat the level using CBF, becoming its first victor.[6]
    • Additionally, a few other people started playing it after its rating.
      • On 6 June 2025, PoCle got a 68-100% run on Amethyst.[7] In the next two days, he managed to get 23%.[8] As of September, he has not given any new progress update.
      • On 10 July 2025, the popular Colombian player RaeveZ managed to achieve a noclip run with 99.13% accuracy.[9] After this, he would get 60-100% on 6 August,[10] 37-60% on 19 August,[11] and beat the level in four separate runs on 28 August.[12]
      • On 11 July 2025, PureL completed the level in 10 separate segments (runs).[13] After this, he stated that he would not be attempting to complete it. However, on 30 August, he uploaded a video of a 67-100% run, having spent 40,000 attempts at that point.[14]
      • On 29 July 2025, a player named Sangkan uploaded a video in which he does 44-100% on andromeda, beats Anathema in two runs, and gains an incredible run on Amethyst, 45-100%.[15] However, despite this and his previous achievements in the game, he announced in the same video that he is quitting the game forever, stating: 'my (life) goal doesn't align with me playing this game anymore'.
  • After beating Amethyst, Zoink believes that Thinking Space II, his verification project, is more difficult than Amethyst.
  • Amethyst is the 41st Top 1 in the game's history.
