Athanatos is a 2.0/2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration level created by Exenity, Herzilo, and Gaelo, published by Exenity, and originally hack-verified by Aurorus on 5 November 2016. Later, it was update-verified by Xavier on 5 November 2021 after exactly five years.

Athanatos was placed at #1 on the Official Extreme and Insane Demon Records List (nowadays known as the Demonlist), surpassing Sakupen Hell. A remake, Anemesis, was hosted by LimeTime313 and is set to also be the hardest level in the game.

Gameplay

• 0-53%: The level starts with a half-speed robot segment containing a difficult orb- and spike timing. Next, the player enters a wave segment that features ridiculously tight spaces, reminiscent of the Cataclysm last wave segment except with numerous invisible gravity- and dual portals. After this is a very intense straight-fly sequence featuring orbs and gravity portals. Next, the player enters a UFO segment comprised mainly of orb taps, which turns into a ball with one fake space and then another straight-fly sequence, with text saying 'Death is Near...'. After that, there is a cube maze, a short auto section before the 'drop'.
• 53-100%: The drop of this level starts with a triple-speed mini-ship sequence. Then, a mini-cube with numerous orbs, another mini-ship sequence, followed by a wave that briefly switches to a robot before going back to wave, with both wave sections featuring extremely tight spaces. Next are short UFO- and cube sections, before another mini-ball, robot, ship, and a long wave section, followed by a ship sequence comprised of multiple teleportation portals, and lastly, an easy cube section until the end of the level.

• The level is free to copy.
• The level contains 31,296 objects.
• The level is 1m 13s in length.
• The level was initially placed at #5 on the Demonlist on 4 January 2017, above Phobos (#6) and below Infernal Abyss (#4).
• It is currently #75 on the High Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above Killbot (#76) and below Silentium Gradas (#74), and #25 on the Low Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above Bausha Vortex (#26) and below Celestial Force (#24).
  • Rusty is the first person to beat Athanatos on mobile.
• 'Athanatos' is a Greek word meaning 'immortal', 'eternal', 'deathless', etc.
• Aurorus claimed this level to be even harder than Bloodbath. Following the release of Athanatos, a debate spread through the community about determining which of the two levels is more difficult.
• Aurorus claimed it took over 40,000 attempts to verify this level (it is proven that his verification was hacked).
  • With this, he also claimed that he was planning to re-beat it later after Thanksgiving since the verification was 'not recorded properly'. The video he uploaded on his channel was a clip of him beating the level with the noclip hack as a filler.
• While the verification itself was not recorded, many believed that Aurorus beat it legitimately since he had completed the level from 14% to 100% (using start pos.) before and had a high score of 71%.
  • However, the Official Extreme- and Insane Demon Record List states that it had been hacked, albeit it was labelled as 'possibly hacked' several days later before it went back to being labelled as 'hacked'.
• Although the verification was revealed to be hacked, the level remained rated regardless.
• Sunix is the first legitimate victor to beat it in around 8,000 attempts. The second is knobbelboy, taking 20,000 attempts. BlassCFB is the third person to beat it with 10,576 attempts.
• A lot of drama has been circulating at this level. Exenity gave a copy of it to Sunix and TacoMacho. Aurorus got angry and overreacted by deleting and changing his username and making one of his levels into a free Demon on Exenity's old account. Aurorus received a lot of hate, but the community quickly forgave him. Later, he made a deal with Exenity for permission to verify the level.
• Athanatos used to be above Bloodbath at #1 on the Demonlist. However, as a punishment for hacking, it was moved below it. It has since been moved above Bloodbath again.
• There is an upcoming remake titled Anemesis, hosted by Lime. It was previously intended to be the Top 1 difficulty but is now set to be the Top 3 difficulty. It is currently being verified by swiborg.
• This used to be Brandon Larkin's least favorite level until he found Belloq worse.
• The level was initially supposed to be the sequel to aftermath.
• Athanatos is the 22nd former Top 1 in the game's history.
• The placement of Requiem on 7 October 2021 pushed Athanatos into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.
