Psychosis is a high-intensity solo level that cemented Hinds' reputation for creating "clean" but brutally difficult gameplay. It is often described as the spiritual successor to Hinds' other hit, Firewall, sharing a similar color-pulse aesthetic and focus on ship control.

Description

  • 0% – 20% (The Intro): The level starts with a fast-paced Cube and Ball sequence. It is very click-synced and relies on hitting small platforms and gravity pads precisely.
  • 20% – 42% (The Ship & Wave Build-up): The difficulty begins to ramp up with tight Ship maneuvers and a fast Wave section. This part is notorious for its "Hinds-style" gameplay: tight spaces that require micro-adjustments rather than long holds.
  • 42% – 63% (The Calm & Transition): A slightly slower section featuring Ball and UFO gameplay. It feels like a "breather," but don't get complacent—there is a secret message at 61% that says "Noice ;>;" if you fly through a specific gap.
  • 63% – 85% (The Final Boss Sequence): While there isn't a literal "boss" the difficulty peaks here. You face a series of high-speed mini-wave and mini-ship transitions that are extremely tight and inconsistent.
  • 85% – 100% (The Nerve Control): The level ends with a UFO and Cube stretch. It isn't the hardest part mechanically, but the "nerves" (player anxiety) cause many people to fail at 98% or 99% on the final jumps.

Trivia

  • For years, Psychosis was rated Insane Demon. It was eventually downgraded to Hard Demon, a move that sparked massive debate in the community. Many players still consider it a "Mid-tier Insane Demon" because of the sheer ship skill required.
  • The original song, Spiders by Acid-Notation, was removed from Newgrounds for a period. This made Psychosis a "NONG" (Not On Newgrounds) level for many players, requiring them to manually replace the song files to hear the music.
  • A player named Joshua83 famously beat this level with a heart rate monitor, recording a pulse of 208 BPM at the end—showing just how much of a "nerve-tester" this level is.
