B is a 2.1 Medium Demon collaboration level by Motleyorc and ScorchVx, published on 21 May 2017. It is a yellow-and-brown bee-themed level with beehive-like designs and a boss fight against a large bee.

History

[edit | edit source]

On 17 February 2017, Motleyorc sent ScorchVx a Discord message, explaining that he wanted to make a bee-themed boss-fight level.[1] ScorchVx asked if he could help, which Motleyorc agreed to. They finalized the name as 'B', and began to work on the gameplay.

On 3 May 2017, ScorchVx uploaded a video titled 'B (sneak peak)'.[2] This video showcased the completed first cube of the level. Four days later, ScorchVx uploaded an extended sneak peek of the level, which showcased their completed first part.[3] On the same day, Motleyorc uploaded a video called 'B Preview I', in which he played through ScorchVx's first part.[4] In the description of this video, Motleyorc stated, 'This level started as a meme, but it's turning out amazing!'

Three days after their first preview of B, Motleyorc uploaded a second preview.[5] This video showcased the completed first part of the level. The part in the video is almost identical to the one in the final level, except that the boss rotates much less frequently. This video was the final preview of the level.

On 21 May 2017, Motleyorc uploaded a video of the completed level, and ScorchVx did the same the following day.[6][7] The level was then uploaded to Motleyorc's account. In total, the level took just over three months to build.

Description

[edit | edit source]
  • 0-17% (ScorchVx): B begins with a simple cube section. The block design consists of hexagonal honeycomb shapes. There are large pools of honey, as well as several hexagonal orbs (every orb in the level is hexagonal). The background features a rotating bee silhouette that follows the music, along with a pinwheel effect. In this section, the player can enable LDM or ULDM. At 8%, the level transitions into a spider section with a few tight timings, as well as orbs and jump pads. The decoration features more honey pools and a new brown honeycomb block design. The background features honeycombs that shift with the music, while the foreground features dancing bees moving up and down on the sides of the screen.
  • 17-42% (Motleyorc): This section introduces the level's boss, which is a large bee. The player is a ship, and must navigate around hive structures and avoid stationary bees. The boss periodically turns around and attempts to sting the player, and occasionally sends out small bees which the player needs to dodge. The player becomes a UFO at 30%, although the boss' attacks do not change. During the UFO section, a swarm of bees slowly approaches from the left side of the screen. During this entire section, the block design is modelled after beehives, and the background features honeycombs that undulate and pulse with the music.
  • 42-71% (ScorchVx): This section begins as the robot game-mode and features many orbs and jumps of varying sizes. The block design features hexagonal honeycombs with moving faces, and the background features rotating concentric octagons with a bee face at the centre. After this, the player faces a difficult quadruple-speed ball section. This segment requires fast clicking and some timing. The top and bottom of the screen feature rows of bees with their stingers exposed, which will kill the player if they miss a click.
  • 71-100% (Motleyorc): This section continues the boss fight from Motleyorc's first section, but with the bee being enraged this time. The player is a wave, and must avoid moving honeycomb hexagons. They then have to traverse through moderately tight diagonal corridors while the boss circles them. In the background, large bees fly by that look similar to the boss. The player then becomes a spider, although the decoration remains the same. After this segment, the boss falls off the screen, accompanied by the text 'I HAVE BEEN BEEFEATED'. The level ends with a simple, normal-speed cube segment featuring a giant queen bee in the background, followed by a simple end screen.

User coins

[edit | edit source]

B contains two user coins.

  • The first coin is located at 19%. To get it, the player needs to take the lower path and fly between two bees without touching them.
  • The second and final coin is located at 45%. To get it, the player must skip the green dash orb and fall onto the platform that the coin is on. From there, the player must perform a large robot jump and hit the green orb to return to the main path. This coin route is considered easier than the main route.

Controversy

[edit | edit source]

On 2 April 2026, Motleyorc claimed that a new store launched by Waboo featured a bee plush that uses art from their level 'B'. They explicitly stated they did not permit the use of their art for such merchandise. Motleyorc mentioned having successfully taken down pages selling 'B' merchandise in the past and expressed a clear intent to do so again if their intellectual property is used without authorization.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • B was ranked #53 in GDToday's '100 Greatest Levels of All Time' list.
  • B was nominated for and achieved Best Themed Level in the Geometry Dash 2.1 Awards.
  • B is the second most-downloaded and most-liked Medium Demon, just behind Skeletal Shenanigans.
  • Jeyzor, Alkali, and Rustam all left comments on Motleyorc's video of B, praising the level.[6]
    • RobTop himself also shared the video on Twitter.[8]
  • Many creators have made remakes of B, such as Zom B by Voxicat,[9] Bee by kDarko and F5night,[10] C by GMDLuca,[11] HoneyComb by Alex112300,[12] and Honey by SpooFy.[13] The first two are rated.
  • As an April Fools' Day joke, Motleyorc uploaded a video of a blue version of B that he named 'C' (different from GMDLuca's remake).[14] It was done in response to the hundreds of requests he received asking him to create an ocean-themed sequel to B called C.
  • B was entered in ChaSe's 2.1 Bossfight Creator Contest. It came in second place, losing only to MasterGame by Serponge.[15]
  • Motleyorc has referenced B in other levels he has worked on, such as Flap[16] and Panispheric.[17]
  • B once had all of its comments deleted by a hacker.
  • In the level Beauty Underneath, there is an LED-bee boss at 69% from Act III: Beneath a Moonless Sky.
