Future Funk is a 2.1 Hard Demon by JonathanGD, verified by mbed on 28 March 2018.[1] It draws heavy inspiration from the main level Clutterfunk and High Life. Future Funk received acclaim from players for its gameplay, design, song, and sync, and is credited with popularising longer Hard Demon levels.[2][3][4] It became the second most-liked and most-downloaded Hard Demon in Geometry Dash.

A sequel, Future Funk II, was created and released later in Update 2.1.

Description

Future Funk begins with an easy cube section, with a short UFO part in the middle. After a short ship section, followed by a wave section, followed by another cube, the level's name appears for a brief moment. A mini-cube section with a couple of fakes comes after that, with a double-speed ship sequence containing many rotating obstacles following. After some short ball, UFO, and mini-cube parts, a more difficult wave section follows.

Next is an easier normal-speed robot, followed by a short triple-speed ship. A cube section with a range of sizes is next, with a short ball part in the middle. A more difficult mini-cube section follows, with some fakes included. After a double-speed ship sequence, a short break is included, and the player enters a cube section during the music's slowdown. A tight normal-speed ship sequence follows.

The next section features a robot part, a cube, a ship section, a tight UFO and another robot part. Next is a symmetrical dual, with two dual-waves and dual-UFOs included. After a long spider segment with some fakes, there is a short break as the music slows down. This segment transitions into an easy mini-cube with more unique decoration. When the music speeds up, the player is welcomed with a tricky UFO and ship segment with many moving objects. The following section is also entirely a dual, this time much harder and asymmetrical, with a dual-cube, a cube/ball dual, a ship/ball dual, and a robot/ball dual segment.

As the music calms down again, the player enters a half-speed cube part, with objects moving to the beat of the song. A cube segment with varying speeds and many orbs is next, followed by a fast-paced mini-ball part. An easy normal-speed mini-cube comes after. The next segment is entirely in double speed, including a robot part, a tight UFO, a short mini-cube, a mini-ball part, a spider section and another cube part. The last section contains an effect that flashes the year 2018 in the background. The gameplay includes a tricky mini-ship section, a robot section, and some cube parts with short, tricky wave sections in between. The level ends with three pink orbs, all of which require timing. Hitting the orbs prematurely would cause the player to crash at 99%.

User coins

  • The first coin is located at 8%. The player must fly through a very narrow passage below to collect it. However, the player must collect a flask for a coin to appear there.
    • The flask is located at 2%. To collect it, the player must spam through the lower passage.
  • The second coin is located at 58%. The player must hit the first and third square orbs to collect the coin. For this to work, the player must collect the skull.
    • The skull is located at 26%. The player must avoid hitting the yellow orb after the two blue orbs; they must then fall and jump to collect it.
  • The third and final coin is located at 99%, at the very end of the level. It is free to collect. But for this to occur, the player must first hit the square orb and then collect the skull. When they do so, the level will give them a random challenge. If the player succeeds, they are rewarded with the coin. However, if they fail, they will not be rewarded with the coin, as if they had not collected the keys in the first place.
    • The orb is located at 86%. The player must jump and hit it quickly.
    • The skull is located at 89%. The player also needs to jump to obtain it, making sure to avoid the incoming sawblade.
      • After collecting the skull, the player will be faced with a random challenge after entering the final ship. The challenges include:
        • Shaky Gameplay: The screen will shake until the final cube section.
        • Get all 8 coins: The player must collect all eight coins scattered in the ending.
        • Don't touch the red orbs: Red trigger orbs will appear throughout the ending that will kill the icon, and the player must not activate any of them.
        • Click to turn on lights: The ending will be dark; however, the screen will flash every time the player clicks/taps.
        • Invisible Player: The player is invisible (although the trail will still be visible) until the final pink orbs, and the player must use instinct or memory to get through this challenge.
        • Mirror gameplay: While the player is entering the last ship, a mirror portal will be present there as well. The mirror gameplay will last until the final pink orbs.
        • Click less than 35 times: A click counter will appear over the icon until the final cube section. The player must click at most 35 times, or the coin will not appear.
        • Click more than 55 times: A click counter will appear over the icon until the final cube section. The player must click at least 55 times for the coin to appear.
        • Limited vision: Only a small region around the icon will be visible.

Community response

As of March 2026, Future Funk received over 39.3 million downloads and 1.1 million likes,[5] making it the second-most-downloaded and liked Hard Demon, behind Nine Circles.

Nexus called Future Funk 'amazing' and 'probably [his] favorite from Jonathan.'[6] Viprin praised it as 'one of the most iconic 2.1 levels [...], if not across all versions.'[7]

Future Funk was ranked #17 in Geometry Dash Today's '100 Greatest Levels of All Time' list, published in 2023. Writing for GDToday, RedHuseey described Future Funk as 'first and foremost a level everyone has to at least play and challenge themselves to eventually complete.'[8]

Sequels

In 2020, JonathanGD released the sequel to Future Funk, Future Funk II. It uses another LemKuuja song, is harder, and places less emphasis on the original Clutterfunk and High Life inspiration. The sequel saw comparative success to the original. As of March 2026, it has more than 10.7 million downloads and 362,000 likes, being the 12th-most-downloaded and liked Insane Demon.

On April Fools' Day 2024, JonathanGD would publish 'future funk iii     ' (with five spaces) as a parody of the series. In the description, he stated that this is not the real Future Funk III and that he has no intention of making such a level.

Trivia

  • Future Funk was rated on 30 March 2018.
  • Future Funk's password, 701013, is the same as its song ID.
  • Future Funk was ranked #17 in GDToday's '100 Greatest Levels of All Time' list.
  • Future Funk was nominated for and achieved Best XL Demon award in the Geometry Dash 2.1 Awards.
  • Future Funk is split into two parts; the first is a Clutterfunk remake, and the second is a High Life remake.
  • Future Funk is JonathanGD's third-rated XL level. The others being BuTiTi II, Dark Travel and Future Funk II.
  • There is text before the mini-cube part saying, 'Every level must have a double spike', and another fainter text saying, 'For AeonAir', being a parody of Michigun and his triple spikes.
  • Future Funk is a sub-genre of electronic music. The level's soundtrack refers to this particular genre.
  • On 18 July 2020, the 99% jump was slightly nerfed.
  • If the player crashes at 33-34%, a text appears saying, 'No secret way 4 u'.
  • Future Funk received an update in August 2020 without a version change.
  • The music for Future Funk got removed from Newgrounds because LemKuuja was caught sampling. However, it still works in-game because it is uploaded to the game's servers.

Errors

  • At 16%, if the player holds for a specific amount instead of landing on the fake spike, they can jump on the edge of the structure next to it, hold again, hit the red orb and make it back onto the main path, unharmed.
  • At 26.9%, the player can skip the green orb and hit the yellow orb late, landing on the other side of the platform and hitting a red orb to return to the main path.
  • As the player is supposed to transition from a half-speed cube to the ship, they can enter said mini-ship part at 34% at half speed when the speed is supposed to change to normal speed. The player can also enter it and stay as a cube. They can do this by timing the first two orbs very late, skipping the middle orb and hitting the last two orbs before entering the mini-ship portal.
