Aperture is a 2.2 Insane mega-collaboration level published by chunlv1. It was created for the Space Gauntlet Contest, in which it placed fourth overall. It is the fourth level of the Cosmos Gauntlet.
Upon its release, Aperture received widespread acclaim for its high-quality art, animation, and innovative use of 3D effects, with gameplay videos garnering millions of views on YouTube.[1] It is considered to be one of the best levels of Update 2.2.
Description
Aperture tells the story of a girl who loves astronomy and dreams of becoming an astronomer. The level is highly focused on its visuals, using an anime-esque art style with high-quality decoration.
- 0-22%: Aperture begins with a spider sequence inside of some spinning circular structures inside of what appears to be a notebook. It then transitions into a cube section featuring many different scattered notes and papers, as well as a test with a red F on it. A girl can be seen floating in the background.
- 22-31%: Next is a robot section that takes place inside a library, where the player must jump atop several parts of machinery. The text reads, 'For how long were you asleep?' The camera then focuses on a telescope, before zooming in on the moon.
- 31-41%: Seen through the lens of a camera, the player becomes a UFO and must avoid the ground while constellations can be seen in the background. The perspective then switches, and the player becomes a ship, but the gameplay otherwise remains identical.
- 41-47%: The next section features cube gameplay, where multiple notes and formulas can be seen scattered about. The text reads 'When was the last moment that sparked interest towards astronomy?' while the level counts to 5.
- 47-57%: The player then transitions into a Swing section inside a bedroom. The swing briefly becomes mini before turning into a ship. The player must avoid the multiple obstacles appearing in the foreground. The camera then zooms into the moon once again.
- 57-67%: This section features more robot gameplay, while an observatory can be seen in the middle, circling. It then cuts to a girl who covers her hands over the moon as if they were a camera.
- 67-83%: After that comes the famous 3D section. The player becomes a cube and does some orb jumps, while the camera is positioned from behind them. It then switches to ball gameplay, while the camera remains behind them as they enter a satellite. The perspective switches back to normal, followed by very brief cube and UFO gameplay set among the stars.
- 83-100%: The player then becomes a wave and must avoid some obstacles, before the wave becomes a dual in another 3D section, where the walls and some stars must be avoided. The rest of the level is auto, featuring a high-quality end screen with the same girl from earlier holding a star in her hands while the credits play.
