Template:Infobox Level Exasperation is a 2.1 former impossible level created by Thycket. It is infamous for its length, extreme difficulty, absurd gameplay, and utterly dissonant song, with a black and white colour scheme. All mechanics—orbs and portals—are replaced with question marks. The level was technically left unfinished as a layout, with only the first structure decorated. Since 2021, Thycket has decided to create an actual decorated version of Exasperation with the help of GDNacho.

Exasperation is an open verification, and besides Zoink, no other player has come close to verifying it, with one exception being WatchPiggy, who achieved 24-50% back in May of 2022. Zoink's progress is highly notable, as he has beaten his own record and simultaneously set a world record a few times. Recently, he has achieved best runs of 67% and 65-100%.

Once verified and rated, Exasperation is expected to be placed at #1 on the Demonlist.

History

Template:Stub/Section

Exasperation was first announced when Thycket uploaded a video entitled 'NEAR-IMPOSSIBLE DEMON LAYOUT?' This announcement sparked one of the biggest trends—and rages—within the Geometry Dash community.

After this, ToshDeluxe created a video about Exasperation, causing it to get more attention than ever. This level's possibility was widely debated, especially for its considered extreme length, difficulty, and off-putting song.

Gameplay

Template:Low-Faith/Section Note: This description refers to the decorated version.[1]

  • 0-2% (HaellM): Exasperation begins at half-speed with a jump over the small spike on the left of the block and land on the right of a block, then goes to a blue orb with three clicks at once, going up to an invisible blue pad, then a dash orb over the spike, jumping through the tight gap between two blocks, jumping on the edge of a spike, jumping precisely between the spikes, hitting the blue orb perfectly to get through the tight gap, hitting a black orb and jump between the blocks without touching the hitboxes, clicking the black orb twice to land on both edges of a small spike, jumping over the quadruple-spike gap, and a five blue orb spam, where you have to click each blue orb once. It then transitions to a wave with extremely tight gaps.
  • 2-5% (Kacurro): There is a ship where we go through a thorn arrangement at a 45 degree angle to a cube landing at the edge of a spike and five pink orbs ascending the cube with scattered orbs in order: yellow, black, dash, yellow with a yellow gravity portal, yellow. Goes to a tight mini-wave, then a mini-cube with precise blue and green orb timing, landing at the edge of a spike and jumping on the small blocks, a double-spike jump with a red orb on the right edge of the second spike and clicking the orb late to avoid dying to the top spike.
  • 5-8% (SunyX): Next is a mini-cube where you have to jump under the fake portal to avoid dying. When hitting the ground, the mini-cube turns into a mini-ship and must fly through narrow spikes, going down and flying through the big spike above, and two spikes below, going up into the top corridor. There are five paths, each with a corridor with spikes. The correct path is all the way down towards the ground. Then, there is a mini-spider with narrow gaps, followed by a cube with an end jump, which leads to the part where you have to jump over wide gaps.
  • 9-11% (Linox): The mini-cube lands on the edge of a spike, jumping to the edge of another spike, jumping into a mini-ball landing on the right edge of a spike, and going through narrow spaces between spikes, a one-block gap wave going to a cube with a two-block tall jump. There is a memory section where you must click the orbs in the following order: blue, green, green, yellow, blue, red, blue, blue, and red.
  • 11-14% (Pumpkeh): There are a few blue orb timing clicks between the spikes.
  • 14-18% (SunyX + M3dinaGX): There are two pink orb timings where you have to click each orb late to avoid touching the ceiling and die. Then jump from the edge and hit the yellow orb correctly, or else you will hit the other orb and die. Then, we ascend and repeat the same process in the opposite direction, against the gravity. It repeats once.
  • 18-22% (XCHINES + Sycro): Then, we ascend and do a straight fly, then descend and do the same thing at the opposite gravity, then ascend again and do the same thing at normal gravity, then descend.
  • 22-26% (Chuckgamer1): The ship continues with the reminiscent of Jumper with one-block gaps. Then, there is a curved straight-fly, followed by a curved straight wave.
  • 26-30% (wabug): Next is an upside-down cube with a two-block gap jump over the narrow gap, jumping over two blocks and landing on the edge of a small spike, jumping earlier and hitting the pink orb as late as possible and landing on the edge of a small spike. We ascend and switch gravity with pink orbs descending; the last is a dash orb, where you must click as late as possible. The cube jumps on a rising slope, and jumps on a falling slope. Then, you jump to a straight-fly.
  • 30-33% (Fleym): There is a robot where you have to navigate between the randomly placed blocks with dash orbs and gravity changes
  • 33-36% (Ihsa): There is a blind dash-orb click where you have to click as late as possible. Repeats three times.
  • 36-39% (Ihsa + GDNacho): Next, you ascend and descend through a dash orb timing.
  • 39-45% (DraKarMin + GDNacho): You go to a slope that descends, and there are some jumps.
  • 45-48% (SunyX): This is an auto part where the cube rises.
  • 48-50% (KeStar): The speed now changes. It is a normal speed cube with triple spikes; some have to jump between the second spike of the triple spike.
  • 50-55% (Skull): This part is a ball part where there are many fake orbs, black orbs, green orbs and dash orbs, and a pink orb spam. Then, the ball goes into a corridor and clicks the red orb precisely. Then, a tight wave with size changes goes to a ship with size changes, clicks the black orb to pass between the spikes, and navigates through narrow spaces. The player then must hit the red orb, passing through narrow spaces. Then, a UFO with gravity changes and a brief upside-down spam, which goes to a cube, ending with an extended triple spike.
  • 55-61% (GDNacho): The cube descends at a half-speed with orb timings syncing to the voice, then a tight ship, wave, mini-ship, mini-wave. Next is a normal speed ball, where we navigate between the small spikes, hit the black orb to ascend, then descend and navigate between the small spikes again. After that is a tight wave and a mini-ship.
  • 61-62% (schizonek + Gother): Next is a mini-cube pink orb spam.
  • 62-65% (deltaaime): Next is an asymmetrical dual that consists of a mini-ship and mini-cube with orbs and gravity-changes, an auto cube, then an upside-down mini-UFO spam, and a mini-cube pink orb timing.
  • 65-68% (Mexui + Kacurro): Next is a wave with narrow gaps, slopes and size changes, then a mini-cube with orb timings syncing to the voice.
  • 68-70% (duke): This spider part involves taping in a structure made entirely of blocks, it is tight, and has orbs. It ends with a mini-cube pink orb spam.
  • 70-72% (Ballistic): Next is a mini-UFO asymmetrical dual, then a mini-ball swing copter.
  • 72-74% (Skywalker2016): Next is a very tight mini-ship, then a normal-sized ship with gravity changes.
  • 74-76% (Juanchus04): Next is a triple-spike as an extended double-spike jump that goes to a wave with a 30-degree slope with gravity and size changes. It ends with a mini-cube orb timing at the edge of a spike, then a narrow jump.
  • 76-78% (Hakim Bey): This part is a tilted ship going to the ground, a blue orb in narrow spaces and straight-fly, then a mini-cube with a double spike jump and going up the stairs.
  • 78-100% (Sycro): The rest of the gameplay is by Sycro. This part is a mini-spider part with slopes and narrow gaps. The drop begins with a triple-speed wave, accompanied by size changes. When the wave is normal-sized, the spaces are tight. When it is mini-sized, it has more spaces. This part requires ten clicks per second. There are also trees blocking the way, making it harder. It then transforms into a cube, and the level ends.

Notable runs

Besides Zoink another player has been recently playing the level, Clare who has completed Exasperation in two runs.[2]

Trivia

  • There are a few sequels to Exasperation: Indignation (Exasperation v2), Disquietude (Exasperation v3), Rub the Wrong Way (Exasperation v4), and Incommodiousness (Exasperation v5).
    • There is also an unofficial sequel to the level called Resentment.
  • In the editor, there are messages from Thycket about the objects in the original Exasperation.
  • The song is one of the oldest Newgrounds songs to be used in a level, having been made in 2005.[3]
    • There are two voice line samples used in the song.
      • The voice 'MAMMA MIA, THAT'S A SPICY MEATBALL!' became a meme. This audio originated from the 1969 Alka-Seltzer advertisement.[4]
      • The voice 'THAT'S A JOKE, SON! DON'T YOU GET IT? I made a funny, son, and you're not laughing.' originated from the character Foghorn Leghorn. It also became a meme, with people often commenting with this quote on showcases on Exasperation.[5]
  • Sea made an infamous rant video on Exasperation.[6]
  • After Zoink achieved 65-100% on the level, he commented that this section alone already places it within the Top 5-10 of the Demonlist.
