Heliopolis is an unverified 2.1/2.2 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted by MindCap, set to an open verification. The level shares similarities with Acropolis in its gameplay, as both are exclusively at 0.5x speed and pure timing levels. The setting is influenced by Heliopolis, an Egyptian city that holds significance for MindCap as his home town. Heliopolis is set to be the hardest level in the game, competing against numerous other upcoming levels.

The current record runs are 85% and 49-100% by Zoink,[1][2] although the level is expected to receive a buffdate following the recent verification of GRIEF.

History

Early development

Heliopolis began development in 2020, and on 5 April 2022, MindCap showcased the layout of Heliopolis, a timing-based level designed to test the player's skill across every game-mode at the slowest possible speed, excluding the ship.[3]

On 30 August 2022, Mindcap uploaded a preview of the first 16% decorated, with the whole level to be decorated by StarkyTheSalad.[4] On 3 January 2023, MindCap uploaded another preview of the level, this time showcasing more of it, as well as mentioning people involved with the project—StarkyTheSalad, responsible for the level's design, Galaxxyss and Yoonsr, responsible for effects, Zetex, responsible for recording the preview, and Pennutoh, Spamdrew128, and Stormfly being the creators of the layout shown so far in that preview. On 10 May 2023, yet another preview was uploaded by MindCap, with him again mentioning the people involved in the project—Yoonsr and Magpipe being the new people responsible for the level's design, and Licen's and Wespdx's layout being showcased in the preview, as Heliopolis was showcased almost in its entirety.[5] On 2 August 2023, MindCap uploaded the final teaser on his YouTube channel.[6]

On 20 August, MindCap released a full showcase of Heliopolis.[7] MindCap thanked StarkyTheSalad for helping decorate much of the level, as well as matty2003 and Magpipe, who joined the project after StarkyTheSalad quit.

Verification race

Pre-open verification

MindCap's full showcase of Heliopolis announced Pablohh as the verifier, saying he had already reached 27% on the level. MindCap also said that Pablohh wanted to verify it on 240Hz. On the same day, he uploaded his progress to his YouTube channel.[8] On 31 October, he reached 36%[9] and later set a record of 39%.

However, on 16 February 2024, MindCap announced that Pablohh had dropped the level and given the verification to Jif, who had achieved 46%.[10] On 20 April, Jif announced he was kicked from the verification due to demotivation.[11] MindCap passed the verification to Draxit III, but he dropped it after being unable to do the last wave. MindCap then passed it secretly to another verifier.

On 14 November, MindCap revealed the secret verifier in a joke tweet, Thnnder, who has spent over 108,000 attempts on the level.[12] Thnnder had teased his secret project six days before.[13] Later that day, Thnnder officially revealed his verification project and his progress run of 60-100% on the super-buffed version of the original unnerfed copy of the level.[14] He later achieved 17% and a run of 49-87%.[15][16]

However, after a stroke and accompanying finger pain, Thnnder temporarily quit the game on 8 March 2025 and dropped the level. Meanwhile, Abdieldevil picked up the level and began making progress, achieving a 27-50% run and a 48-100% run for the second time.[17] Before he picked up the level, he got 48-100% on Thnnder's version.

On 27 May, MindCap released a video showcasing the number of frame-perfects in the level.[18] Additionally, he announced up to three open verifier slots for anyone to join Abdieldevil for verification.

After becoming the second victor of Every End, garbag picked up the level soon after and joined the race. He quickly made progress from 0%. On 20 September, he reached 28%, becoming the first player to pass Spamdrew128's UFO part.[19] His current record was 31%, achieved on 17 December.[20] Abdieldevil took back the record with 32% on the level on 19 December.[21] Additionally, he set a record run of 38-95% on 29 January 2026.[22] garbag tied the record at 32% on 18 February, although he failed earlier than Abdieldevil.[23] garbag extended the record by a fluke to 39% on 24 February.[24]

On 11 March, MindCap posted an update on Heliopolis's status. He implied he would make Heliopolis an open verification on 25 March to make up for the level's long release time, while also competing with other upcoming top levels (e.g., GRIEF, Angelicide, KOCMOC Unleashed, etc.).

Open verification and Zoink

On 25 March 2026, MindCap uploaded a video announcing Heliopolis's open verification. He stated that it would be continually buffed to be harder than any other verified Top 1 until Heliopolis is verified.[25] In addition, MindCap set a bounty starting at $2,000 USD for the verifier. The bounty was opened on a Ko-fi page to allow community donations to raise the bounty with a maximum cap of $10,000 USD. The bounty reached $10,700 USD in less than a day and a half after MindCap released the video.[26]

Since then, on 6 April, garbag extended the lead again, reaching a record of 47%.[27] On 13 April, Abdieldevil achieved a run of 38-97%, nearly going from the second half of the robot to the end.[28]

On 27 April, Zoink started playing Heliopolis and achieved runs of 34% and 49-100% within a week.[29] On 7 May, Zoink announced that he would officially try to verify Heliopolis.[30] He later reached 37% and 40% in the next stream.

On 10 May, Zoink set a world-record run of 37-100%, making him the first player to beat Heliopolis in two runs.[31] He would get 39% twice and another 40% in the next two streams until 13 May, when he increased the record to 41% and then finally set a new world record, tying garbag's 47% record but going further by a few decimals.[32] He later set a new record of 27-73% in the next stream.[33]

On 17 May, he would attempt to play Heliopolis with the Click Between Frames (CBF) mod, as he did in the first stream. In that stream, he got another 47%.[34] On 28 May, Zoink took a break from streaming until 4 June, as he went outside his town.

Zoink returned to streaming and, on 7 June, set a new world record of 51%, becoming the first person to reach the spider part.[35]

Other people's progress

theopex58, one of the last remaining participants in npesta's '100 Pros vs Heliopolis' event, would post his 26% run on 16 April 2026.[36] Despite his elimination from the challenge, he kept grinding the level. On 28 April, he achieved 31% after 93,000 attempts.[37] On 26 May, he uploaded a video in which he beat Heliopolis in four runs: 31%, 27-56%, 49-77%, and 77-100%.[38]

Another player, iIiLaseriIi, achieved a run of 48-100% on Heliopolis.[39]

Bradenbowl completed Heliopolis in three runs as of 9 August 2026.[40]

npesta's Heliopolis event

On 1 April 2026, which coincidentally is April Fools' Day, npesta announced the start of his event called '100 Pros vs Heliopolis', aimed at getting Heliopolis verified faster.[41][42] The event works in a way that every day each player must improve their current best record by 1%, so on day 1, everyone must get 1%, on day 2, 2%, and so on. If a player gets beyond that, they must try again to crash at the exact percentage; for example, if a player gets 10% on day 9 but did not get 9% beforehand, they must still fail there, even though they have already passed that point. Despite this criterion, practising further beyond is always allowed. In his YouTube and Twitter posts, npesta left a Google Docs form for players to fill out to join the event.[43] However, only players who beat a list Demon placed on the Demonlist at the time, and players who did not beat a Top 10 were allowed to join. Despite initially aiming to gather 100 players, the number of participants was increased to 260.[44]

At the start of the challenge, npesta gave all the competitors three opportunities to skip a day. When a player skips, they no longer need to reach a certain percentage on the day they skipped, and the skip moves them to the next day. Once Day 10 of the Heliopolis race arrived, players had only one chance to skip. However, once only five players remained in the challenge, no skips remained.

hstorm, one of the last remaining competitors, provided all the updates through YouTube Shorts and live streams about the number of players left, his own progress, and answered frequently asked questions about the level and the event.[45][46] Aside from that, hstorm used the skip ability only once on Day 24.

On Day 19, the host of the event itself, npesta, was eliminated because he was unable to reach the percentage he was supposed to reach that day.[47]

On Day 24, four players remained in the event for Day 25: Komet01, theopex58, KJ8ISHERE, and previously mentioned hstorm. npesta gave all the players a break from playing that day.

All four players survived Day 25, but theopex58 was eliminated on Day 26. KJ8ISHERE almost got eliminated but came in clutch, getting 26% with two minutes left before the deadline. Ultimately, KJ8ISHERE and hstorm would be eliminated on Day 27, crowning Komet01 as the event winner.

On 18 May 2026, MindCap released a video recapping the community progress on Heliopolis over the past 50 days since the open verification. He thanked everyone for their donations and for raising a total of $10,700 in bounty for Heliopolis. He also showed that most top players did not think even this amount was worth the difficulty of Heliopolis. He also showed footage of Top 25 players who got the farthest on the level in npesta's '100 Pros vs Heliopolis' event, and iIiLaseriIi, who got a 48-100% run on 9 April.[39] Later in the video, MindCap mentioned Zoink and how quickly he completed the level in two runs.

Update reversion and reinstatement

In the same community progress video, MindCap also said he believed the version of Heliopolis that Zoink was verifying was only barely harder than the Top 1 level, Thinking Space II, at the time.[48] For this reason, MindCap decided to buff Heliopolis to settle the ambiguity, specifically the easier second half of the level.

However, two hours later, MindCap released a follow-up video announcing that he had decided to revert the buff-date. He explained that it would be unfair to deprive all upcoming Top 1 verifiers of their potential titles, including Taiago with Sweeping Demon II and Doggie with GRIEF, admitting that he was being selfish. MindCap now believed Heliopolis might already be hard enough to claim the top spot, since it took Zoink as much time to reach 47% on Heliopolis as it did to reach 97% on Amethyst.[49]

During his first stream beating Snowbound on 15 July 2026, Zoink mentioned that Heliopolis would receive an update in August with buffs and fixes.[50] MindCap finished the update on 9 September, which was intended to be harder than Society, the newly verified Top 1 level, albeit easier than GRIEF.[51] MindCap had players who had Heliopolis in four runs or less assist with the update, including fixing CBF bugs and maintaining specific buffs from his cancelled 'emergency' update.

After finishing Antarctic Lights, Zoink picked up Heliopolis again to try the newly buffed version, with his first stream reaching 36% and a 49-94% run.[52] In the next stream, he managed 50%, almost back to his original best of 51%.[53] The very next stream, he tied his new best, getting 51% on the buffed version and beating his original best by a few decimal places.[54] Afterwards, he finished off the run of 49-100% in the next stream.[2] He later set a new record run of 16-80%.[55]

On 21 September, Zoink finally surpassed his record, reaching 66% and passing the spider part.[56] On 1 October 2026, Zoink achieved 85%, fluking from 66%.[1] However, GRIEF was ultimately verified on 5 October as the new Top 1 level.[57] Zoink began streaming on 6 October to try to beat GRIEF because he wanted to gauge its difficulty in comparison with Heliopolis as he waits for another upcoming buff update.[58]

  • 0-16% (Pennutoh + StarkyTheSalad + Galaxxyss + MindCap + matty2003): Heliopolis begins with Pennutoh's part, beginning with a difficult double-spike jump as a cube at 0.5x speed. The level maintains that slow speed throughout until the end. His part utilises claustrophobic orb timings and jumps, with numerous tiny holes accessed through precisely timed orb jumps.
  • 16-27% (Spamdrew128 + StarkyTheSalad + Galaxxyss + MindCap + matty2003): The next part is an extremely difficult mini-UFO mainly consisting of well-timed jumps over the gear sawblades.
  • 27-38% (Stormfly + StarkyTheSalad + Galaxxyss + MindCap + matty2003): The next part is a robot that focuses on jumping over very narrow holes in between the spikes and orb jumps. At 33%, the robot turns to normal size to enter a large cave-in surrounded by spikes. This segment now focuses on mini jumps due to limited jumping space, similar to Amber or Shardscapes.
  • 38-49% (Licentious + Yoonsr): Licentious's part continues the robot part left from Stormfly's part. Unlike the previous part, it utilises floating blocks with more fake routes and memorisation.
  • 49-60% (Wespdx + Magpipe): The next part transitions into a spider, primarily focusing on tricky gravity changes and timed orb jumps, with its design theming around buildings.
  • 60-71% (GD Iris + matty2003): A difficult ball part similar to Acropolis, which has numerous adjacent orbs. Thus, it demands well-coordinated clicks.
  • 71-77% (icedcave + matty2003 + Inex): icedcave's part is a ball part that simulates a swing-copter by using gravity portals upon input.
  • 77-87% (UFokinWotM8 + Magpipe): A UFO part particularly reliant on well-timed spam due to the tight spaces where the orbs are. The UFO becomes a dual halfway, albeit briefly.
  • 87-100% (para + matty2003 + ViperArctarus + MindCap + Magpipe): A very tight wave part, utilising numerous fake portals and gravity changes to hinder the player as they traverse around the level. Finally, the level ends as a triple-speed cube exits.

Trivia

  • Heliopolis (Greek: Ἡλιούπολις) translates to the 'City of the Sun' and was the major city in Ancient Egypt, the capital of the 13th Nome of Lower Egypt. It is also known as 'Iunu' and 'On'.
    • Heliopolis is the name of MindCap's home town in Egypt. Modern Heliopolis is a suburb of Cairo, Egypt's capital and largest city.
  • Heliopolis's name is stylised as Heliopolis       in-game. That is because the level's name in-game has six spaces at the end, to represent the six original verifiers—Pablohh, Jif, Draxit III, Thnnder, Abdieldevil, and garbag—that either dropped the level or were still verifying before the decision of an open verification.[59]
  • Thnnder's version of Heliopolis was notorious for being almost comically difficult, containing seven 240FPS frame perfects, and dozens of 2-frames and 3-frames, according to Exiled_Shade's frame window count. It was regarded as in the ballpark of levels such as Aeternus in terms of difficulty.[60]
    • Despite the difficulty, Thnnder achieved impressive runs of 17%, 48-87%, and 60-100%.
  • Many people falsely believed that Acropolis inspired the level's name.
    • Although MindCap admitted that the half-speed gimmick had indeed been taken from Acropolis.
  • icedcave's ball-copter part received a major revamp from its original layout.
  • Heliopolis was initially assigned to ItsHybrid for him to host; however, due to the absurd nature of the level, he was unable to make progress in the mega-collaboration and, as such, returned it to MindCap.
    • A part for Heliopolis made by Swagmasta001 and DarkCacti looked decent when ItsHybrid hosted it; however, MindCap felt it did not match the vibe of the level he envisioned.
  • MindCap initially intended Heliopolis's gameplay to be difficulty-dependent on the given FPS value: the lower the FPS, the easier the level would be, and the higher the FPS, the more demanding the level would be.
    • However, he abandoned this idea because he stated that many of his experiments and tests with the level made it look less pleasant to the eye and became considerably buggier to play. The growing popularity of the FPS bypass over the past two years was also a reason.
  • During Zoink's day 3 with Heliopolis, MindCap said that due to a lot of progress happening on the level, he will make a video about all the players who have made significant progress on the level so far and upload it on his channel sometime in May.[61]
    • In that stream, MindCap also said that he will never make another Top 1 level.
  • There is a poster at 85% that reads '2.2 soon...', referring to the billboard in Falling Up with '2.1 soon...', applying the message to the next update, 2.2, since Update 2.1 was released after Falling Up.
    • However, because of the release of Update 2.2 after the initial showcase of the level, an extra '1' was added in spray paint to the poster to say '2.21 soon...' when MindCap announced the open verification.
  • Bee Hunter, the artist behind the level's song 'Apoplexy', wrote it in 1994 on an Amiga A500.[62]
  • Radiopolis, an Insane Demon platformer level created by blobh, was inspired by the gameplay of the platformer Extreme Demon Radio Tower and the aesthetics of Heliopolis.[63]
  • A joke remake of Heliopolis called HelioPOSSIBLE, hosted by Kaza, was verified by one of the original Heliopolis verifiers, Abdieldevil.[64]
  • On 7 May 2026, MindCap hosted a discussion podcast dedicated to Heliopolis and the controversy that started brewing around it a couple of days prior on Twitter.
    • Not long after the podcast ended, MindCap released a statement, explaining more about the Heliopolis situation.[65]
    • MindCap said that he knew that the $10,000 bounty would not convince many people to play the level, because, as of recently, only iIiLaseriIi with a 48-100% run and Komet01, the winner of npesta's '100 Pros vs Heliopolis' event, had committed to really trying the level.
      • MindCap also said the recent hate on Zoink for starting to play Heliopolis is pointless, and people saying he is 'stealing' the verification are in the wrong, since no one besides the two earlier-mentioned players has really tried the level since MindCap announced the $10,000 bounty.
    • In MindCap's opinion, Zoink did not start playing Heliopolis for money at all.
    • Despite being happy about Zoink verifying the level, MindCap's dream verifier has been garbag, who beat RUST, then jumped to Every End, and then jumping to Heliopolis would—in MindCap's opinion—be a perfect underdog story, making the Heliopolis verification very unique and 'magical' in a way.
    • MindCap is certain that npesta's 100 Pros vs Heliopolis challenge brought more people into the Heliopolis playing scene than the bounty itself did, thanks to its approachability (since contestants only needed to improve their previous record by 1% every day, not beat the entire level).
    • MindCap said that the $10,000 bounty he will give to the first victor of Heliopolis is located in Djoxy's (his friend's) bank account due to him living in Egypt, because, as he said, withdrawing a large amount of money and keeping it digitally might cause the Egyptian government to steal it potentially.
    • MindCap initially made the first half of Heliopolis harder and the second half easier because the nerves a player would have while getting past 49% would be enough to balance the level's difficulty.
    • MindCap begged many top players to verify Heliopolis, and Zoink jumping into the level might have been the only lifeline that could let the level get verified in a plausible time.
  • Zoink's verification of Heliopolis (provided he beats the level) differs from his other Top 1 verifications, as MindCap prohibited anyone from changing anything in the level, as it is an open verification.
    • Zoink thinks it is a good thing because his click pattern can become substantially more refined, and he could therefore potentially take less time beating the level.
  • On 11 May 2026, Druki and members of her 'New Angels' Republic' Discord server (mainly dedicated to the upcoming Top 1 level Angelicide) completed Heliopolis in 24 runs and around 70,347 attempts.[66]
  • Zoink stated that once he verifies Heliopolis, he will split the $10,700 bounty between garbag, Abdieldevil, and whoever emerges as the first victor.
