Gamma is a 2.1 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted and published by MindCap and originally verified by Sunix.[1] A coin update and LDM was later added to the level, with the update being verified by Technical.[2]

History

[edit | edit source]

MindCap began working on Gamma in June 2017, when several creators such as Mactanow and Metalface221 made their parts (at that time, WOOGI1411 was planned to be featured in the mega-collaboration as well). Then, DollarC uploaded a new video for a preview of Gamma (with MindCap's permission), and it showed that WOOGI1411's part would be replaced with a part by EndLevel because WOOGI1411 was revealed to be a catfish.[3]

After two months, the level was nearly finished, and Metalface221 released the full-level showcase in August 2017.[4] Now that the full level has been released, the Gamma team had to look for a verifier. At first, Metalface221 was set to verify this level. However, he eventually dropped it for unknown reasons.

Eventually, Sunix was chosen to verify Gamma in November 2017. He started making progress quickly, getting a record of 44% on 11 November 2017.[5] Eight days later, he achieved a new record of 74%, making it to Mactanow's part.[6]

After that, he started streaming Gamma on Twitch and eventually got a record of 90% and then 94%, both fails in iNighti's part. A month later, on 9 December 2017, Sunix finally verified Gamma after over 10,000 attempts. In his video, he verified it on his account but uploaded it onto MindCap's account using a verify hack because he did not want to beat it again.

Soon, there were plans for an unnerfed version of Gamma to make it even harder, but they were cancelled for unknown reasons. So, MindCap instead gave Gamma a Low Detail Mode and Coins Update, which was verified by Technical, who also happened to be making fast progress on the level at that time.

Gameplay

[edit | edit source]
  • 0-8% (Angryboy): The level begins with a pad, taking the player into a chunk of gameplay centred around timing with orbs and jumps as a mini-cube. Orbs come in all varieties and require difficult timings to hit correctly. Halfway through, the cube turns big and goes into double-speed for a short period, then comes a mini-spider with tight spaces to pass through as well as a few orbs to hit. The part ends with a pink dash orb taking the player to a black screen as the words 'Good Luck...' appear.
  • 8-20% (Lemons + ferox242[7]): This part is a lot more hectic than Angryboy's part and features several portal changes throughout. It starts with a cube section, and the player swiftly turns into a tiny mini-ball and then back to cube form. This short cube section leads into a spider with two orbs, leading back to another cube, this time a bit longer. After this confusing cube section comes a short mini-straight-fly into a sync-based mini-wave. A dual-mini-cube comes next with a few jumps, then a short ship and spider followed by each other. Near the end is a tight wave segment with multiple size changes, and a robot with one blue orb and two pink dash orbs takes the player to the next part.
  • 20-33% (Metalface221): As the gameplay from Lemons' part seems to go on, a teleportation portal takes the player to a completely different part started with a long, fast memory UFO with size/gravity portals cluttering up the entire part as well as a few orbs here and there. After this UFO comes a wave with a few size portals to adapt to, and then a swing copter through a dark passageway leading to the final upside-down straight-fly which needs to be timed so that the mini-cube on top will jump at the right moment as well. Successfully doing so will take the player onward to the host's part.
  • 33-40% (MindCap): Here, the gameplay will start with a slow ship section requiring precise clicks to pass through the many small straight-fly bursts. The ship then turns into a mini-wave with clicks that need to be just as, if not more precise than the ship before it. The wave finishes with a triple-speed portal, taking the player into a reverse mini-UFO which will require some spamming from the player as well as remembering the invisible gravity portals found here. The part then ends with a fast straight-fly into an invisible teleportation portal.
  • 40-49% (Pennutoh): This section was designed by Mactanow, but the layout by Pennutoh is as follows: Beginning with a bit of straight-fly and a red orb jump, the layout switches gravity many times through the ball, UFO and cube gameplay. More straight-flying and a difficult mini-wave section follow, with precise timing. After transitioning through all that, one last mini-wave section leads the player to finish this section and quickly cuts off dark as it leads to Lithifusion's part.
  • 49-62% (Lithifusion): This part starts with a series of dots, saying, 'Go!' Quickly, the player will transition to an incredibly fast dual section with Killbot-styled effects, controlling a ship through one-block spaces, then from both mini and regular waves, until reaching incredibly difficult mini-ship straight-fly segments. After the last dual-ball section, the player will transition to a single cube and hit the right orbs at the right time with the right memory. After passing through several more difficult gameplay transitions, a final wave segment finishes this part. This decoration is unique and excessively extreme for the shape decoration featured in this section.
  • 62-76% (Mactanow): This part starts with quick transitions at triple-and quadruple-speed between cube and wave. Next is a short UFO section with a gravity switch, and transitions into short segments of ship, wave, cube and one robot section. These short sections include gravity switches, orbs, pads and size changes. The rest of this part is similar to the beginning, with short segments and difficult timings. This part is finished with one final straight-fly section leading to a cube portal.
  • 76-83% (Djoxy + HequinoX): This section starts with a cube at half-speed. The player has to jump between multiple spikes, and this section has multiple timings. A text above the player says 'Deco: Djoxy' and 'Layout: HQ'. Next is a short UFO segment with an orb. This segment transitions into a cube section where the player has to jump over many spikes and triple-spike jumps. This segment transitions into double-speed, a triple-speed straight-fly segment and a quintuple-spike jump to transition into iNighti's part.
  • 83-100% (iNighti): This part features special bright rainbow illuminations around the entire section, giving off a haze of the blocks and spikes throughout this part. After some straight-fly and a large cube jump require excessive timings of orbs as a mini-cube, and then pass through more straight-fly sections, where the name is displayed underneath in the base of the blocks. After this, several spider jumps lead the way to extremely difficult UFO timings, with regular leaps and orbs alternating each jump. After another cube jump, a small cavern is shown for the last ship part. Afterwards, the end screen with the level name appears, and the free coin is given. However, landing on the ground will kill the player.

User coins

[edit | edit source]
  • At 30% in the wave game-mode, if the player goes between two sawblades through a tight space, they will obtain the first coin.
  • At 79%, if the player jumps and lands on a yellow pad, the player will bounce extra high to obtain the second coin.
  • The final coin in the level. The player obtains it at the end by going through the heart at the end of the level, which is meant to be a reward for completing the level.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The level was initially placed at #3 on the Demonlist on 26 December 2017, above Erebus (#4) and below Plasma Pulse Finale (#2).
    • This addition pushed Artificial Ascent out of the Top 10 for the first time. It is currently unknown what levels they were pushed off into the Extended List and the Legacy List at that exact moment.
  • After Gamma was placed, people found this and Plasma Pulse Finale harder than Sonic Wave. Therefore, Plasma Pulse Finale would move to #1 and Gamma to #2.
  • This is one of the most stressful levels Sunix has beaten, according to himself, surpassing Erebus, Yatagarasu and even Sonic Wave, on which he spent many months.
  • Crashing at the sawblades on 98% will cause the text 'HINDS LOL' to pop out. It is a reference to Hinds' 99% fail at Ultraviolet.[8]
  • Sunix verified Gamma on his account, but he instead uploaded it onto MindCap's account using a verify hack due to him not wanting to go through the level again.
  • The level once had a planned update where it will update to its unnerfed state (which is considered harder than Bloodlust) and was set to be verified by Wooshi. It was later cancelled and replaced with an LDM and coin update, verified by Technical on 17 June 2018.
  • This is Colorbolt's least favourite Extreme Demon.[9]
  • Gamma (Γ, γ) is the third letter of the Greek alphabet. In the system of Greek numerals, it has a value of 3.
    • The Gamma variant (P.1) is one of the variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This variant of SARS-CoV-2 is named lineage P.1 with 17 amino acid substitutions, ten of which are in its spike protein, including these three designated to be of particular concern: N501Y, E484K, and K417T.
  • This was the hardest level in The Greek Alphabet Trilogy until Sigma was moved above. It is now the easiest level in its Trilogy, but most people consider Gamma the hardest in The Greek Alphabet Trilogy.
  • This is the only level in the Greek Alphabet Trilogy not using a Dimrain47 song.
  • Skarro was the first to beat Gamma on a controller with 8,838 attempts.[verification needed]
  • The placement of Frost Spirit on 29 November 2023 pushed Gamma into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.
    • Gamma was moved from #152 to #150 on the next day on 30 November 2023, pushing Gamma back into the Extended List and Power Grid back into the Legacy List for the second time.
      • The placement of Cicatrize on 5 December 2023 pushed Gamma back into the Legacy List for the second time.
        • Dance of the Violins was moved from #122 to the Legacy List on 6 December 2023, pushing Gamma back into the Extended List once more.
          • However, the placement of Eyes in the Water on the same day kicked it back into the Legacy List.
            • This makes it the first level of the Greek Letter Trilogy to fall off the list.
            • This level is one of the Extreme Demons that was pushed into the Legacy List at least three times, and one of very few that actually fell out of the Top 150 three times.
