Duelo Maestro is a 2.0-2.2 Insane Demon level by Nacho21, published on 15 August 2016. It is famous for its two-player dual-mode gameplay at the drops; the first drop is symmetrical, but the second is asymmetrical. The level received acclaim for its gameplay, design, music, and sync.[1] It is the third most downloaded multiplayer level and inspired numerous players to publish completions of the level with friends and family.

A major update was verified and published by Nacho21 on 2 September 2023, finishing the decoration, slightly nerfing the pre-drops, buffing both drops, and adding a Low Detail Mode (LDM). This update was dropped without an announcement and caused mild confusion among players.

Description

[edit | edit source]
  • 0-19%: Duelo Maestro begins with the player in solo mode. There is a rather tricky cube section with multiple fake orbs and portals, followed by an equally confusing robot section with numerous invisible platforms and routes. It then moves to a dark ship sequence with tight passages and a few orbs to manoeuvre, followed by a dark ball segment containing multiple trick orbs.
  • 19-23%: This is the build-up to the first two-player dual part; the player enters half-speed in a cube segment. When the player drops, a text message saying 'DROP SIMÉTRICO' appears, signalling the start of the drop, and instructions appear showing which sides are controlled by the space and mouse.
  • 23-41%: The first two-player dual appears; however, it is relatively simple as the duals are symmetrical (hence the text 'Drop simétrico.'). The players progress through various forms in order: the cube, ship, wave, UFO, robot, and ball.
  • 41-56%: A dark robot section follows, consisting of small jumps acting as a cooldown section. After that is a moderately tight half-speed wave sequence, followed by a tricky ship sequence that requires the player to be hit by pulsing blocks, and then an easy cube sequence with pulsing blocks.
  • 56-60%: The second build-up alternates between ship, ball, UFO, and wave segments of the song's beat, suddenly making it rather tricky. Before the two-player dual part, a second text saying 'Drop asimétrico. ¡Prepárate!' appears, signalling the start of the second drop.
  • 60-85%: The second drop is asymmetrical, requiring both parts to be controlled independently. There are numerous keys along the way, with Player 1 and Player 2 colours (does not matter which coloured key the player gets; no consequence for Player 1, for example, picking up a Player 2 coloured key). Failure to collect even a single key in this segment results in a guaranteed death. The asymmetrical dual goes through various forms, including the ship, wave, cube, UFO, and ball.
  • 85-94%: This second-last segment acts as a second cooldown section. The dual ends and the cube go through an auto segment with the player invisible. Before the level ends, the player must hit a series of invisible orbs marked with '?'. This part is actually harder than it looks, since it involves some timings. Missing a single orb would result in falling onto invisible sawblades.
  • 94-100%: Finally, the player enters another dual sequence, and the level shows a long line of messages. They are '¡Gracias por jugar!,' '¡Espero que les guste esta nueva versión!,' and 'Más información en mi video.' After that, a long list of names appears, and the level ends with the title and an enlarged dual portal.

User coins

[edit | edit source]

Unlike most other levels, there is no secret way to collect the coins; at the end of the second cooldown (88%), the player automatically collects two coins, but they can choose to collect one by jumping to avoid one of the coins.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Duelo Maestro was rated in late November 2016.
  • Upon the creation of the modern Demonlist on Pointercrate on 4 January 2017, Duelo Maestro was placed at #46, above Asymmetry and below Future Circles.
  • Duelo Maestro was ranked #37 in 'GDToday's 100 Greatest Levels of All Time' list.
  • Duelo Maestro was originally intended to be a remaster of Invisible Light, a Nine Circles level, before being revised into its current state.
  • While players like SiKky, SrGuillester, KrmaL, Dorami, and Doggie managed to beat Duelo Maestro solo, others beat the level with the assistance of another player.
    • Surv beat it with Eternaswip.
    • ToshDeluxe beat it with Jelly.
    • Dorami rebeat it with Life.
      • Later, Dorami rebeat it with his ex-girlfriend, moonlight, on 6 January 2023.
    • TrusTa beat it with Emsic.
    • GuitarHeroStyles beat it with SoulsTRK.
    • Technical beat it with npesta.
      • Later, the whole gang (Technical, npesta, Gizbro, and Golden) ended up beating Duelo Maestro altogether.
    • DeCody beat it with MaFFaKa.
    • Nexus beat it with his brother.
    • RedHuseey beat it with ToshDeluxe, knobbelboy, Hori, and Eternaswip.
    • Many more players are thought to have taken this approach.
  • Two-player records were once valid on the Demonlist before being removed because the list team wanted individual records, making Duelo Maestro one of the only list levels to be multiplayer. Another is Elite Z Rebirth. However, this rule was retracted due to Codependence, an at-the-time two-player potential Top 10 Demon, being beaten by Pukklez.
  • Duelo Maestro, when translated to English, is 'Master Duel', which is somewhat fitting considering the level focuses on very hard mixed duals, albeit the words duel and dual are homophones.
    • 'Master Duel' is also the name of Zylenox's remake of this level.
  • 'Drop Simétrico' means 'Symmetrical Drop', while 'Drop Asimétrico' means 'Asymmetric Drop'.
  • Nacho21 created Duelo Maestro because he was too defensive about Invisible Light being criticized by Riot for not being fun, so Nacho21 instead wanted to redo Invisible Light with the song 'Lunar Abyss', giving birth to Duelo Maestro, but Invisible Light instead received a nerfdate. When Duelo Maestro was released, a level was made because Nacho21 loved the song; almost no Demons focused on the dual two-player mechanic at the time.[2]
    • Lchavasse is the artist alias of the player and level creator TheDevon, who has created parts in many prolific mega-collaborations such as Digital Descent, Cybernetic Crescent, and CastleMania, as well as having many rated levels of his own.[3]
  • Many people accuse Nacho21, the creator of Duelo Maestro, of hacking the level despite having a verification video.
  • Duelo Maestro is the most downloaded 2-player Demon in the game.
  • Duelo Maestro is the hardest Insane Demon in the Legacy List, ahead of Gammaray.
  • In the original version of Duelo Maestro, the following message appeared:
“
'Gracias por jugar. La 2.1 sera mi actualizacion para crear mucho mejor... Este nivel es creado por Nacho21.' ('Thanks for playing. 2.1 will be my update to create much better levels. The level is created by Nacho21.')
~ Nacho21
  • The placement of Devil Vortex on 7 June 2017 pushed Duelo Maestro into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.
    • Duelo Maestro returned; however, it was after the Demonlist increased from the Top 50 to 100 in October 2017.
      • The placement of Dark Flare on 13 April 2019 pushed it back into the Legacy List.
        • Again, Duelo Maestro returned to the Extended List after the Demonlist increased from the Top 100 to 150 in June 2019.
          • However, the placement of Exotic Energy on 25 October 2019 pushed Duelo Maestro back into the Legacy List again.
