Psychosis is a 2.0 Hard Demon level by Hinds. It is a high-intensity level that cemented Hinds' reputation for creating 'clean' but brutally difficult gameplay. It features gameplay reminiscent of Update 1.9 despite being a 2.0 level. It is often described as the spiritual successor to Hinds' other hit, Firewall, sharing a similar colour-pulse aesthetic and dynamic gameplay, with heavy focus on ship control.

Description

[edit | edit source]

The beginning of Psychosis is moderately difficult, requiring several tricks, precise timing, and straight-flying. The level becomes slightly harder near the drop as speed increases and more sequences are introduced. Each part has a specific game-mode:

  • Cube: Quadruple/quintuple spikes at triple speed, mostly timing.
  • Ship: Tight corridors with many gravity and size portals, and straight-flying.
  • UFO: Tight spaces, several parts with spamming, and timing.
  • Ball: Many spikes and orbs, mostly timing and memorisation.
  • Wave: Somewhat tight spaces, size, and gravity portals, mostly timing.

The level ends with a simple yet annoying fast-paced cube section. It is very similar to Firewall's first one.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Psychosis was ranked #50 in GDToday's '100 Greatest Levels of All Time' list.
  • The music for Psychosis was removed from Newgrounds because Acid-Notation was caught for sampling.
  • A player named Joshua83 famously beat Psychosis with a heart rate monitor, recording a pulse of 208 BPM at the end, showing how much of a 'nerve-tester' the level is.[1]
  • Going between the sawblades as the mini-wave at 61% will cause the text 'Noice ;>;' to appear.
  • For years, Psychosis was rated an Insane Demon. It was eventually downgraded to a Hard Demon, a move that sparked massive debate in the community. Many players still consider it a mid-tier Insane Demon because of the sheer ship skill required.
  • A friend suggested the name of the level, Psychosis, presumably for the song used.
