Aeternus (formerly known as Eternal) is an unverified 2.1/2.2 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted by Riot and others. It is the third level in a trilogy of hell-themed Top 1 levels hosted by Riot, succeeding Tartarus and Acheron, and is promoted as likely being Riot's final project. Aeternus's gameplay features extremely tight wave sections and near-impossible ship gaps. In line with its predecessors, it features more 2.1 mechanics, such as the red orb and quadruple-speed portal, and a colour scheme of red, purple and predominantly grey.

Aeternus was designed to be nearly humanly impossible and was thus openly hack-verified and published as an open verification for any player to attempt. According to icedcave and ryamu, the level is meant to be verified in the far future, similarly to the unnerfed Silent clubstep, and they are currently disallowing any player changes as they will adjust the level's balancing by themselves.[1]

Whether Aeternus is actually impossible is highly debatable, as various top players hold differing opinions. Some think that Aeternus will never be beaten; some think that it will, but not for at least 10 years; and some think that players as skilled as Zoink could, of course, beat Aeternus if they just poured enough attempts into it. However, there are very few top players even attempting to tackle the level.

History

Because Aeternus's development was kept secret, it is unknown when it was first created, though it presumably occurred after Acheron's verification in August 2022. Aeternus was first teased by ryamu and Riot on their YouTube channels on 27 April 2023.[2] On Riot's channel, he explained that the finished level was to be revealed as a surprise. However, he then changed his decision due to the recent exposure of spaceuk, elaborating in the description of the teaser uploaded on his YouTube channel:

Throughout this games history, there have been countless cheaters. I had my own personal experience with Cyclic 7 years ago that was very similar to this entire situation. I know how players like Zoink, Wolvez, Crisis, Doggie and others must feel. Cheaters choose to take shortcuts in hopes of achieving respect, popularity, money, or all of the above. These people erode the community’s trust and morale, and create even more division in an already divided landscape.

People like Space are selfish, they will only confess when their back is against the wall, resistant till the end. After the confession is done, people quickly forgive and forget. This kind of nonchalant attitude towards cheating is why things like this keep happening 10 years on from the game’s release. I hope that with such a monumental exposing of a player who reigned supreme over the community for nearly 2 years, the attitude will finally shift.

That brings me to the reason I'm actually teasing this project. The level is still a few months out, but I wanted to create hope for up and coming top players, and even the current ones. Future generations need someone and something to look forward to; a place to direct all their passion and energy for the game. That’s what has kept the playing community so strong after all this time, and what will continue to do so.

This project will likely be my last in Geometry Dash, and it is intended to inspire all players to shoot for the stars. With enough hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything. This is something I believed in and its what helped me create a name for myself within this community.

If you share this belief and wish to cement yourself in this games history, I hope you choose to pick up this level once it’s released. It won’t be easy, and it will take lots of hard work and dedication, but this is the kind of achievement that will never be forgotten.

The impossible can become possible if you choose to believe.

Following a few decorative and gameplay tweaks, Aeternus was published on 18 March 2024 for open verification.[3]

The first significant update/nerf to Aeternus since its initial release was released on 31 May 2026,[4] consisting of just one actual, very miniscule nerf to a sawblade at 23%, with the remaining changes being various and tweaks to make the gameplay more consistent and less buggy (not easier), and also a buff to a spike at 59%. Bug fixes included extending the height of speed portals to ensure the player would always hit them at the same time and resolving potential alignment issues.

Verification race

Currently, no player has made much significant progress on the level. However, a handful of players have been attempting Aeternus recently.

However, a breakthrough has been achieved quite recently, as on 15 March 2026, it was revealed that the level has been completed in 11 separate runs by the combined effort of dewbbs, aden, SilkizinhoYT, JustAComfyCookie, Doggie, FlinGuSPluNkuS, wShock, and Chill Guy.[5]

On 31 March 2026, the players managed to bring down the run count from eleven, completing the entire level in just nine runs and a combined attempt count of over 3 million.[6]

On 9 April, the run count was decreased once again, with all the players completing Aeternus in just eight runs and after 3,141,181 attempts.[7]

On 7 June, the players reduced the global run count to seven runs, bringing the total to over 3.5 million attempts spent.[8]

On 20 June, Aeternus is completed in six runs globally, accumulating over 2.4 million attempts.[9]

Chill Guy

Chill Guy is the most notable contender of this race and is attempting to complete it as a jump from Bloodbath. After achieving a world record run of 84-100% after 594,323 attempts on 9 November 2024, he stopped making new updates whatsoever.[10] He suddenly returned on 2 January 2026[11] with a new run of 91-100%. Since then, he has set a world record run of 72-100%. Chill Guy has consistently made updates, actively trying to pass runs such as 60-100%, beating them in runs, or with noclip accuracy. On 4 April, he did 6-18%,[12] then 11-22%,[13] and a new record of 16% on 9 April,[14] and 11-20% three times on 12 April.[15]

Chill Guy took a break to focus on his exams until 15 June, during which he also played other levels on the side. He plans to achieve 22% upon his comeback. His current attempt count on the level is over 1 million.

dewbbs

Before making runs on Aeternus, dewbbs was playing GRIEF. However, he stopped playing it after Doggie urged players to wait until he verified the level. Therefore, dewbbs started playing Aeternus. Despite not playing it as frequently as Chill Guy, he managed to get very impressive runs, such as 13%,[16] 15%,[17] 16%,[18] 17%,[19] and then 20%,[20] as well as 9-20%[21] and 9-22%,[22] totalling the entire first drop. For now, his ultimate goal is to get 22% on the level, and he has already spent over 260,000 attempts. On 2 April 2026, he achieved a 56-60% run, a very difficult wave part, which he considers harder than 18%.[23] On 11 April, dewbbs achieved a current world record by getting 20%.[24] Both he and Chill Guy are working towards achieving 22%. Meanwhile, on 27 June, he got a new world record run of 24-39%.[25]

wShock

wShock's first progress on Aeternus was uploaded on 15 February 2025, in which he did the 'maze' part of the level before the first drop.[26] On 14 September, he made a comeback, completing the 80-100% run with 96% noclip accuracy.[27] A week later, he achieved an impressive feat—he completed the entire level with 92.20% noclip accuracy, dying 159 times.[28] After a period of not sharing any new progress, he uploaded a 91-100% run on the level on 7 January 2026.[29] Since then, he has been consistently making progress on Aeternus. He would then go on to achieve 60-100% in three runs,[30] 49-100% in 5 runs,[31] and 36-100% in 8 runs uploaded on 17 March.[32] The following day, he did 24-100% in 11 runs,[33] as well as completed the entire level in 16 runs.[34] On 21 March, he passed a 42-47.8% run.[35] In the next three days, he achieved 72-91%,[36] 14-22% on 2 April,[37] 82-100% the following day,[38] and then did the 88-91% run eight times in a row.[39]

On 8 April, wShock beat Aeternus in 10 runs, achieving the world record after 452,492 attempts.[40] On 18 April, he got a world record run of 30-42%.[41] On 8 May, he got to 15.56%.[42] On 22 May, he achieved a world record run of 24-34%,[43] and another of 60-76% on 24 May.[44] He later got several other runs, such as 26.91% with 99.1% accuracy,[45] 11-19%,[46] and 48-59%.[47] On 28 May, he got a world record run of 53-63%,[48] and a day later, he managed to get the monumental world record run of 48-61%.[49] On 6 June, he set another world record run of 19-30%,[50] and he got Aeternus in eight runs solo despite being 13 years old.[51] Two days later, he got a new best of 16%.[52] On 16 June, he got a run of 42-51%.[53] On 18 June, he achieved a new record run of 60-79%,[54] and later, tied aden's world record run of 56-69%.[55] On 20 June, he managed to get a world record run of 58-74%.[56] On 22 June, he set a goal to try and get Aeternus in five runs by running a poll on which run to go for next: 25%, 24-43%, or 60-100%.[57] The winning choice was 60-100%.[58] Meanwhile, by 26 June, he got Aeternus in seven runs solo.[59] The next day, he got a new world record noclip run with 64 deaths, spending over 700,000 attempts at this point.[60] On 7 July, he managed to get a run of 53-64%.[61] The next day, he got a run of 67-84%.[62] On 21 July, he managed to achieve a world record run of 16-27%, fluking the 26% wave.[63]

aden (yoshi)

aden uploaded his first progress on 26 August 2025, managing an 88-100% run.[64] Since then, he consistently provided updates on his progress. On 5 September, he got 86-100%;[65] on 12 September, 79-87% and 72-79%;[66] three months later, he achieved an 82-96% run;[67] and on 23 December, 82-100%.[68] On 20 January 2026, he set a world record with a 13-22% run,[69] and the next day, a 20-25% run.[70] He then got a noclip run of 67-100% with six deaths,[71] 72-86% on 11 February,[72] 69-82% on 17 February,[73] and on 27 February, 60-100% in four runs.[74] On 16 March, he achieved 62-72% and a 58-100% run in 10 noclip accuracy deaths.[75] In the next days, he got 58-69%,[76] then 79-100% on 25 March,[77] and on 28 March, he would get the former world record run of 77-100%;[78] this run was slightly further than Chill Guy's previous 77-100% run, making it a world record. In the following days, he managed 16-24%,[79] completed Aeternus in 14 runs,[80] achieved 56-64%,[81] got 72-90% on 8 April,[82] then did a 56-69% world record run,[83] and beat the level in 57 deaths on 8 May.[84] On 14 May, he has beaten Aeternus in 10 runs after over 350,000 attempts, tying wShock's world record.[85] He temporarily stopped playing Aeternus on 24 May,[86] citing that other players, like polpetto, were seen as way better, which demotivated him. However, polpetto would be exposed for hacking, resulting in aden returning to Aeternus. Such progress would be made on 19 to 20 June: 43-57%,[87] 49-60%,[88] 26-40%,[89] and 42-59%.[90] On 23 June, he achieved a run of 24-36%,[91] and a day later, he would complete a world record noclip run of 19-100% in 33 deaths.[92]

FlinGuSPluNkuS

FlinGuSPluNkuS uploaded his first Aeternus progress video on 18 November 2025; this run set the former world record and tied the world record at 55-61%.[93] Other popular players like Doggie[94] and PureL[95] had done this run before; while short, it consists of the hardest part in Aeternus, and he achieved this milestone in around 25,000 attempts. On 24 March 2026, FlinGuSPluNkuS achieved the world record run of 52-61%.[96] He claimed that this run is harder than the former world record run of 77-100% by Chill Guy. FlinGuSPluNkuS then got a world record run of 47-57% on 8 May,[97] and he extended it to 47-59% on 12 May.[98] He got some more runs, such as 52-61%,[99] 47-55% three times in a row,[100] and almost 48-60%, with 1 death.[101] On 19 June, he almost got the world record run of 42-61%, failing once at the end.[102]

Initially, SilkizinhoYT achieved 72-100% with 89.25% noclip accuracy,[103] 4-13% on 14 May 2025,[104] and 27-31% and 29-32% on 7 September.[105] However, he started getting better and better with the level, achieving a world record of 24-31% on 8 October,[106] 24-33% on 25 January 2026,[107] a run of 27-34% twice,[108] and completing the entire level in 31 separate runs.[109] On 9 April, he achieved a run of 29-34% on mobile,[110] and another world record run of 27-36% on 12 April.[111] On 15 April, he managed to get a 30-40% run.[112] Much later, on 16 July, he achieved a run of 24-34%, his new mental hardest achievement.[113] His current attempt count exceeds 1.3 million.

Cclixgd

Cclixgd uploaded his first progress video on Aeternus on 26 January 2026, featuring a clip of him completing the last wave four times in a row (88-92%+).[114] Later, on 8 February, he uploaded a five-minute video titled 'I spent 100.000 attempts on AETERNUS...', where he showcased various runs such as 88-100% three times, a noclip accuracy run of 78-92% in 1 death, 84-100% in 1 death, 69-75% three times, 72-81%, 78-90%, 69-85% in 3 deaths, 69-100% in 11 deaths, and 60-100% in 22 deaths.[115] He also had several unrecorded runs, such as 82-95%, 84-96%, and 72-100% in 7 deaths.

On 29 March 2026, Cclixgd set two Aeternus world records in one day: 38-45%[116] and 32-43%.[117] The latter was important for the community's completion of Aeternus in eight runs. A couple of days later, on 1 April 2026, he uploaded a tied world record of 42-50%.[118] Just two days later, he achieved a new world record of 42-52%, choking a 42-53% run by one click, which would have allowed the community to have Aeternus in eight runs.[119] That achievement ultimately happened a week later when aden achieved a 42-53% run. On 18 June, he managed to get runs of 47-57% and 51-58%.[120] That same day, he achieved a new best run of 82-100%.[121] On 29 June, he improved his run to 78-100%.[122] As of now, Cclixgd has spent over 251,000 attempts on Aeternus.

Description

Note: If a player's name is italicised, the player has created gameplay in the section featured. If a player's name is underlined, the player has created decoration in the section featured.

  • 0-12% (GrenadeofTacos + ryamu + Deadlox + Riot): Aeternus begins with a difficult cube section similar to its predecessors. The first jump is similar to those of Tartarus and Acheron. The player must then hit a blue orb from the ground to hit a series of orbs until a blue orb spam. The player then speeds up to double speed halfway through the part. The second half of the part now utilises fake sections and orbs to mislead and confuse the player, exacerbated by the level's blackness, making it difficult to visualise where to head.
  • 12-19% (endevvor + icedcave): The drop of the music starts, and the player goes into a brief auto cube sequence before changing into a ship. This ship sequence is brutal due to its claustrophobic, tight gaps and numerous gravity changes. After that, the player enters a series of difficult yet brief game-modes, shifting between a mini-wave consisting of tight slopes lined with thorny hazards and a difficult ship sequence.
  • 19-22% (HeroZombie80 + icedcave): This part focuses on orb timings with the ship, along with numerous gravity changes, although this part is brief. This part shares similarities with The Devil, an unverified Extreme Demon by HeroZombie80.
  • 22-24% (Deadlox): Next is a difficult wave sequence consisting of numerous spike pillars and gear sawblades designed to make the level feel claustrophobic.
  • 24-36% (GD Iris + Cersia): The level fades to black before flashing to the level's colour scheme again. The player must go into a brief cube sequence and hit a black orb to enter a difficult wave sequence consisting of size and gravity changes before entering a cube portal again, which follows similar gameplay as the first one, then followed by an upside-down UFO sequence consisting of spam-clicking to avoid the Clubstep monster's teeth (spikes) from above, the gameplay then changes from spam-click to absurd timings before transitioning to a tough ship sequence inspired by Acheron's ship part. The player must crawl into a spiky tunnel to enter a gravity and mini-portal. Afterwards, they must carefully hit the yellow orb with a precise calculation for the ship's trajectory to avoid the hazards and enter the gravity portals that lead to the next section. The next section follows a normal-sized cube with gameplay similar to the aforementioned cube parts.
  • 36-42% (Deadlox + Riot): A normal-speed yet difficult UFO inspired by Azuler's part in Tartarus. This UFO part demands spam-clicking and orb timing while the player must carefully jump across tight spaces, then a mini-ship sequence with more tight gaps.
  • 42-48% (Deadlox): The player then enters a difficult ball-copter sequence, loosely inspired by Salaxium's part in Tartarus as well. It switches from a ball to a cube halfway through the part.
  • 48-53% (Aquatias + ewop + ryamu): The player then slides down via slope to enter a difficult cube section consisting of horrendous orb timings, particularly orb with a spike above them, along with fixed hitboxes to add salt to the wound. The section then goes into a brief mini-ball sequence. The player must hit the last yellow orb to proceed to the next part.
  • 53-56% (Vermillion + ryamu): The next segment is an extremely difficult mini-ship sequence which gradually changes speed, designed to throw the player off to the hazards. There are numerous unnaturally lined spikes, along with various gravity changes.
  • 56-60% (pluff + ryamu): A tough wave segment consisting of very tight slopes along with size and gravity changes.
  • 60-68% (maxfs + pluff + Haunter): The drop of the song concludes, then the player enters a cube section consisting of fake orbs and paths to mislead the player. The player must hit the last two green orbs and a pink orb to enter a challenging yet brief ship sequence in this part. The player then traverses an exceptionally tight, spiky tunnel.
  • 68-80% (Salaxium + pluff + Deadlox): The music then hits the drop again, where the player enters a difficult ball sequence, albeit having a simple timing gameplay, followed by a mini-ship sequence consisting of traversing through the tight, hazardous tunnels to hit the orbs and gravity portals, the player then must hit one last green orb to enter a difficult wave part, then followed by a UFO sequence emphasising timings along with spam-clicking, halfway through the UFO sequence, it now utilises orb timings then the player must go into a ship sequence where the player must carefully manouevre the ship due to the fake orbs and tight gaps. Afterwards, the player changes gravity and is launched by the slope downwards for a smoother gameplay transition; the player then must perform one last straight-fly section before entering a brief cube sequence, followed by a challenging wave sequence. The player then enters a cube sequence. One must click the green orb aligned with the cube portal to enter the next section.
  • 80-86% (pluff + Deadlox): The following section is a cube sequence in which the player must perform simple yet difficult cube jumps along with hitting the orbs with precise timings to enter a brief yet difficult UFO sequence, followed by another brief cube and straight-fly section. Afterwards, the player goes into a brief mini-cube sequence. The player must enter two gravity portals while clicking the orb on the centre of the portals to avoid hitting the teeth of a small Clubstep monster between the portals. The player then must click three orbs in succession to enter the next section.
  • 86-91% (pluff + icedcave): The following section is a brutally difficult wave sequence. The gameplay then enters a brief auto cube sequence, showing the level title, before returning to another challenging wave sequence.
  • 91-100% (Burgadahz + icedcave): Unlike Tartarus and Acheron, Aeternus's ending utilises a ship sequence instead of the usual wave and ball timings designed to incite the player into extreme nervousness to choke at the last part. This part contains very tight tunnels, demanding careful traversal within the unforgiving gaps of the level. Afterwards, the player must perform one last straight-fly with two fixed hitboxes on the last spikes before the level ends with a 'GG' as the level fades to black, leaving only the 'GG' sign with a faint red colour and a pentagram symbol on top of it.

Trivia

  • The level's name, Aeternus, originates from the Latin translation of the word 'Eternal'.
    • Due to the sheer difficulty of the level, Aeternus is believed to be the last Top 1 the game will likely ever have, and that might be one of the reasons why it is named like that.
    • Aeternus also shares its name with a Norwegian death metal band.
  • Aeternus is the only level in the trilogy that does not use a song composed by DJ-Nate.
    • The song used is a track from the Doom (2016) OST composed by Mick Gordon.
    • Aeternus is also the only level in the trilogy not named after a location from Greek mythology.
  • HeroZombie80's decoration originally covered the entire 10-18% of Aeternus; however, it was replaced as it did not fit the theme of the level.[123]
