Dead God Cult is a 2.2 Hard Demon platformer level by Soverney. It is a deck-building card game with 33 unique cards to acquire, each with different abilities, rarities, and strategies. It was the third Mythic-rated Hard Demon on 13 January 2025. Dead God Cult is a roguelike: gameplay and events are randomised each attempt, and there are no checkpoints, so failure results in starting over. It starts with a specific deck of cards, depending on the chosen cult when starting the level.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Though the player's initial deck depends on which cult they choose, the gameplay of Dead God Cult remains consistent. Before the main gameplay begins, the level provides a brief tutorial explaining its mechanics. Using the player's cards, the goal of the level is to reach 1,000 followers for their cult. There is also a currency called belief, used for upgrades and for removing cards from the player's deck at the church (accessed in the top right). Followers are gained by going on expeditions, accessed in the bottom left. During an expedition, the player is initially given three random cards from their deck to use to reach a predetermined amount of influence within three turns. The order in which cards are played affects the outcome at the end of the turn, determining how much influence is given, encouraging strategic card use. Playing cards in an expedition also costs a certain amount of faith, and if the player cannot afford to play a card, it is useless for that turn, after which their faith refreshes to its starting amount. By default, the player starts with 100 faith per turn. Alternatively, the player can choose to undertake a hard expedition, with a higher influence requirement but higher rewards. Completing an expedition will grant the player followers, belief, and three randomly chosen cards, of which they choose one to add to their deck. Expeditions will require an increasingly higher influence requirement the more the player completes them.

The player can use their belief in two separate locations to upgrade their deck. The Reforge (top left) allows the player to upgrade cards at a cost to their belief, and any card can be upgraded until its cost in an expedition is zero. When using the Reforge, three cards will be randomly picked from the player's deck for them to choose from to upgrade. Belief can also be spent at the Fortune Teller (bottom right), where general stats can be improved, but it becomes increasingly expensive the more improvements the player purchases.

Cults

[edit | edit source]

When starting an attempt, the player must first choose one of three cults, each with its own starting deck and special effects.

The Cult of Fire gains more belief per expedition than other cults, and starts with the following cards (their cost in parentheses):

  • Cultist: Gain 50 influence. (35 faith)
  • The Thing: Copies the highest scored influence. (55 faith)
  • Rethink: Draw one card. (10 faith)
  • Archangel: Gain 55 faith, then gain 25 more if you have below 115 faith. (35 faith)
  • Firelights: Gain +15 influence the further it is on the board. (50 faith)

The Cult of the Prophet starts with cards focused on collecting faith more than other cults, starting with the following cards:

  • Priest: Gain 50 faith and 35 influence. (75 faith)
  • Well: Draw two cards, gain 35 faith. (70 faith)
  • The Prophet: Gain influence equal to faith gained on this turn. (110 faith)
  • Archangel
  • Hope: Gain 35 faith (10 faith)

The Cult of the Old God gives more followers per expedition than other cults, and starts with the following cards:

  • Cultist
  • Priest
  • C'thun: Gain 25 faith, 65 influence, 1.10x influence. Every time you upgrade a card, upgrade this instead. (60 faith)
  • Resupply: Draw two cards. (40 faith)
  • Hope

The Cult of the Secret Society is hidden in a normal playthrough. To play it, instead of choosing one of the three main cults at the start, pressing the Player 2 jump button will present it as an option to play. The Cult of the Secret Society is the only cult without a predetermined deck; instead, it starts with a random assortment of five cards. Unlike other cults, this one does not reward a user coin upon completion.

User coins

[edit | edit source]

There are three user coins in Dead God Cult, each of which requires the level to be completed with a certain cult, requiring the player to beat the level a minimum of three times (one per each cult) to collect all three coins.
