Intro
Free Solo begins with a cutscene showing two cubes sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows while seemingly camping. The cube on the right uses the same icon as the player's in-game cube. During the cutscene, the following conversation takes place:
- Left cube: 'This sure is nice.'
- Right cube: 'Yeah.'
- Left cube: 1Grab me the butter real quick. Mkay?'
- Right cube: 'Right. Uhm...'
- Left cube: 'What's wrong?'
- Right cube: 'I think I may have lost it.'
- The left cube jumps in surprise before, with an angry expression, saying, 'What? How?'
- Right cube: 'Back on the top of the mountain.'
- Left cube: 'Are you serious!? Go get it!'
- Right cube: 'Alright.'
- The right cube then leaves the campfire, during which the left cube says, 'Just make it quick. It's getting late.'
The player can skip the cutscene at any point by jumping
Gameplay
After the introductory cutscene, Free Solo contains no checkpoints. The level consists entirely of mini cube gameplay and features advanced platformer techniques, such as slope boosting and corner jumping. Throughout the level, the player must climb a mountain divided into several distinct parts.
- The Ascend
The level begins in a rocky region, where the player must perform multiple corner jumps and use blue orbs and gravity portals to repeatedly change gravity while avoiding spikes.
- Woodways
This part begins with a narrow corridor lined with spikes, where the player must accurately time several pink orbs to progress. After the spiky corridor, the player enters a wooded area with trees in the background. This section features multiple tight spike timings and introduces the first wavedash jump of the level. It concludes with a sequence of blue orbs that must be activated with precise timings to progress.
- The ruins
After the blue orb sequence, the player enters an area resembling ancient Greek ruins. This section features even more corner jumps, precise orb timings, and frequent gravity changes.
- Downtown
After the ruins, the player enters a carnival-themed area featuring numerous spider orbs. This is followed by a cave filled with crystals, and then a construction-themed area dominated by a large crane that the player must climb. The section ends with the player using two green dash orbs to leave the area.
- The cliffside
The next section takes place along a cliffside and introduces slope boosting as a gameplay mechanic. It also features the first sawblades in the level. After a series of slope boosts, the level continues with additional corner jumps and precise orb timings.
- The garden
The level then continues into a garden-themed area. This part features gameplay similar to the previous areas.
- Coral climb
The penultimate section features coral-like decorations. Here, the player must climb and jump across a series of 1 block slopes. While slope boosting is not required in this section, it can make several jumps easier.
- The summit
After jumping over the final two spikes of the level, the player reaches the summit of the mountain. After passing in front of a background elevator, they retrieve the butter they had previously left there, as mentioned in the introductory cutscene, bringing the gameplay portion of the level to an end.

Trivia
- Free Solo was rated five minutes before Jetpack Trials, preventing the latter from ever becoming the top 1 rated Platformer Demon.
- The intro featuring the line 'Back on the top of the mountain.' might refer to the classic Hard Demon called Back on Mountain.
