Generation Retro is a 2.0 Harder level by ArathhSA. It is the fifth and final level of the Poison Gauntlet.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Generation Retro begins with an easy cube sequence. The main antagonist of the level, a red alien, says 'Welcome!', after which there is a transition with blue pads with the level name above. A robot sequence follows into the drop, featuring a custom key being collected and some gravity switches. Near the end of this sequence, the red alien is seen again, angrily says 'No!', and then flies into the sky. Next is a wave sequence that flashes between green and red. Halfway through, text reads 'Virus Detected', and the part turns red. The player then turns into a mini-wave after this, before the level switches back to green, indicating that the virus is now gone. After this, there is a ball sequence in which the aliens serve as platforms. There is a fake in this part where the red alien disguises itself as a normal alien and kills the player if they land on it. There is an arrow pointing down, indicating the fake. Going down angers the red alien, who attempts to attack the player, but a blue alien comes to the rescue, saying 'Hey!', stopping the red alien in its tracks. The rest of the ball continues as normal. After this, there is a UFO sequence in which the red alien attempts to attack the player again, but thankfully they are protected by shields that the red alien shoots at, creating a path for the player to go through.

After the UFO, an alien that is presumably one of the red alien's minions appears, who evilly laughs at the player with a 'Jajajaja', before declaring that 'You Have Not Win!', and tells them that 'You......DIED!!'. The player screams 'NOO!!' in horror after hearing this information. This begins a boss fight that lasts the rest of the level. The alien immediately shoots a laser in the middle of the screen, which the player must dodge, and then moves up to shoot another one. Thankfully, a weapon appears in the middle of the screen, which the player collects. Once collected, the player fires multiple rounds of green ammunition at the alien, draining half of its health. The alien continues its assault, shooting another laser in the middle of the screen. It then fires a column of three projectiles, which can be avoided by being at the top or bottom of the screen. The alien then moves up and shoots another column of projectiles. After it does this, the blue alien from earlier comes back and screams 'Nooo!' at the alien, before declaring that 'This Is The End... For You!!'. The red alien can only scream out 'NOOO!!' in horror before the blue alien's laser obliterates it. However, it is not over just yet; that was merely the beginning.

The player enters 'Level Final', and the screen flashes as the level turns red. The red alien from earlier has come back for revenge, angrily yelling 'Aaarrghhh!!' before declaring, 'This is my game!!', and telling the player, 'Its [sic] Time For a Game Over!!'. The alien shoots a laser in the middle of the screen, then causes spikes to appear at the bottom and shoots another laser at the player as it moves up. Thankfully, a shield appears and indicates that the player must go up to avoid the spikes and laser. The shield then indicates that the player must move downwards to avoid more obstacles. The red alien angrily yells 'Aaarrghhh!!' once again and shoots another laser, then attempts to ram itself into the player. Once the player avoids its attacks, it laughs with a 'Ja ja ja', and declares that it is now 'Game Over!!', before creating an impassable spike wall.

All hope seems lost for the player, but suddenly, the blue alien comes to the rescue! It yells out 'Nooo!!' and destroys the spike wall with a laser, causing the red alien to angrily yell out 'Aaargghhh!!' once again, who quickly recognises the blue alien from before. It asks, 'You Again!!?', to confirm whether this is the same alien from earlier, and the blue alien responds with an enthusiastic 'Yeah!!'. They then tell the red alien, 'And we Will End!!', which causes the red alien to yell 'NOOOO!!' in horror. Both shoot a laser towards each other, creating a white flash between them. Unfortunately, the red alien's laser overpowers the blue alien's, killing the blue alien. The player yells out 'NOOOOOO!!' in horror as the blue alien dies in front of them, while the red alien cruelly laughs at the blue alien's demise with a 'Ja ja ja ja!'. However, the player has had enough of the red alien and takes matters into their own hands. The player angrily yells out 'GAME......OVER!!', before a white flash appears from within them. They shoot a laser at the red alien, finally defeating them and avenging the blue alien. The red alien can only yell 'NOOOO!!' after being defeated by the player. The level ends after this, showing an end screen with text reading 'Score: 9999', 'GG xD!!', and 'Part 2!!?', along with the Lenny face, the creator's name, and the object count.

User coins

[edit | edit source]
  • The first coin is located in the wave sequence at 22%, requiring the player to fly up after the first obstacle and go into the block to get the coin.
  • The second coin is located at 57%, requiring the player, as a ship, to fly under the alien's attacks.
  • The third and final coin is located at 98%, which is granted free upon completion. Unlike the last two coins, it looks like a coin from Super Mario World.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The aliens are from the famous Taito game Space Invaders.
    • Most of the pixel art is made from 3D objects instead of actual pixel blocks.
  • The red alien says 'Jajajaja' ('Hahahaha' in Spanish) and has somewhat broken English. It is likely because English is not the creator's first language.
  • If the player stays on the ceiling at the end, they will fail at 98% because the wall that the alien used to stop the player suddenly stops moving to the right at that moment.
    • If the player flies into the ceiling rather than staying on it, they will fail at 99% because the wall stops moving prematurely.
  • The player shoots three laser beams at the alien, but only the first two are shown, with the third bullet being invisible.
  • At 17%, if the player flies off the structure or misses the second green orb, they will pass by a weird circular object with decorations (and an eyeball not present when skipping the orb) with no group IDs attached to it, and it is not a coin.
  • Generation Retro used to receive heavy amounts of hatred when it was initially added to the Poison Gauntlet due to the unfitting theme and long boss fight. It still gets a vast amount of hate for its difficulty, poor playtesting, and its decoration, according to the community, among other reasons.
    • Colon released a video in 2023, where he explained his reasoning on why Generation Retro was the worst level in the game. He explained in the comments that he did not hate the level but rather hated that RobTop put it in the Poison Gauntlet.[1]
    • ArathhSA, the creator himself, commented on the video, confirming that he made Generation Retro when he was 13 years old.
    • This video prompted users McMiner3244 and SpaceMagicGD to create a remake of the level Retro Generation that fixes most of its problems. Another Generation Retro remake, created by the user ZenyXcz, was called 'Retro Legacy'. It also fixed the original level's flaws and improved the visuals.
  • Generation Retro's end screen states that there is 22,935 objects in the level despite the actual object count being 23,084.
