Monster Mischief is a 2.1 Insane level by MrKoolTrix. It is the third level of the Monster Gauntlet.

The level uses a series of caves and mechanical environments containing cartoon monsters. Its second half includes two encounters in which the monsters accompany the player through several game-mode changes.

Contest history

[edit | edit source]

Monster Mischief was created for the fourth Gauntlet Creator Contest, which ran from 17 January to 29 March 2018. Entries were required to follow a monster theme and include a boss fight without violent or realistic artwork. Levels also had to be rated eight or nine stars and use a song available on Newgrounds.

Monster Mischief placed fourth in the contest. It was selected as the third level of the Monster Gauntlet, which was released alongside the Death Gauntlet on 11 April 2018.

Description

[edit | edit source]
  • 0-10%: Monster Mischief begins in a brown cave containing wooden platforms, sawblades, and signs directing the player. The player starts as a cube, then changes into a robot. Most obstacles include short platforms, spikes, and orbs. The section ends with a brief transition into a gray-and-green mechanical area.
  • 10-19%: The player changes into a ball and then a ship. Green platforms line the top and bottom of the passage, with sawblades, slopes, and orbs placed between them. The player must alternate gravity as the ball before flying through the remainder of the section.
  • 19-29%: The scenery changes to an icy blue cave. As a cube, the player must follow arrows through narrow passages containing spikes, orbs, and gravity changes. The section ends when the player falls into a green brick chamber.
  • 29-39%: The player changes between a ball, robot, and cube while moving through the green chamber. Brick platforms hang from chains, and blue orbs are positioned between spikes and moving blocks. The screen becomes black before the first monster appears.
  • 39-49%: The first encounter begins with the player as a ship. An orange horned monster rides a floating yellow platform while the player must fly between stone columns and spikes. The monster follows the player across the screen and changes expression during the section. The player then enters a faster tunnel as the monster turns red.
  • 49-60%: The player changes into a spider while the red monster continues through the background. The player must teleport between the floor and ceiling of a purple mechanical tunnel and activate three switches. After the third switch, the monster disappears, and the player enters a green area.
  • 60-70%: The player returns to cube-based gameplay in a bright green chamber. Small black creatures sit on clouds between the platforms. The player must use orbs and gravity changes to pass between stone columns.
  • 70-79%: The scenery changes to red as the player enters as a UFO. The player passes through gravity portals and avoids sawblades, spikes, and suspended platforms.
  • 79-89%: A blue horned monster appears during another UFO sequence. It follows the player through a gray chamber containing narrow pillars and white light effects.
  • 89-100%: The player changes into a robot and then a cube while the blue monster continues along the ground. The player must jump across green platforms and activate orbs as the monster follows from behind. Near the end, the monster falls below the platforms. The level concludes with the title and MrKoolTrix's name appearing against a gray background.[1]

User coins

[edit | edit source]

Monster Mischief contains three user coins.

  1. 23%: The player must collect two keys during the opening sections, at approximately 3% and 10%. The keys unlock the coin in an upper passage of the blue cave.
  2. 72%: A key must be collected from an upper platform at approximately 64%. The coin then appears during the red UFO section.
  3. 89%: The player must collect two keys during the encounter with the blue monster. The coin is then placed along the route leading into the final robot section.[2]
