Athanatos is a 2.0/2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration level by Exenity, Herzilo, and Gaelo, initially hack-verified by Aurorus on 4 November 2016. Later, it was updated and verified by Xavier on 5 November 2021, exactly five years after the initial update; however, in a separate patch, most of the changes were reverted due to making the level way more difficult. Athanatos was placed at #1 on the Demonlist, surpassing Sakupen Hell.

Description

[edit | edit source]
  • 0-53%: Athanatos begins with a half-speed robot segment containing a difficult orb- and spike timing. Next, the player enters a wave segment that features ridiculously tight spaces, reminiscent of the Cataclysm last wave segment, except with numerous invisible gravity and dual portals. After this is a very intense straight-fly sequence featuring orbs and gravity portals. Next, the player enters a UFO segment, mainly composed of orb inputs, which transitions into a ball with one fake space, then another straight-fly sequence, accompanied by text that reads, 'Death is Near...'. After that, there is a cube maze, a short auto section before the 'drop'.
  • 53-100%: The drop of this level starts with a triple-speed mini-ship sequence. Then, a mini-cube with numerous orbs, another mini-ship sequence, followed by a wave that briefly switches to a robot before going back to a wave, with both wave sections featuring extremely tight spaces. Next are short UFO- and cube sections, before another mini-ball, robot, ship, and a long wave section, followed by a ship sequence comprised of multiple teleportation portals, and lastly, an easy cube section until the end of the level.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Upon the creation of the modern Demonlist on Pointercrate on 4 January 2017, Athanatos was placed at #5, above Phobos and below Infernal Abyss.
  • The old version of Athanatos is regarded as the 24th instance of the hardest rated level in the game's history.
  • Athanatos (Greek: Αθανάτος) means 'immortal', 'eternal', 'deathless', etc.
  • Aurorus claimed Athanatos to be even harder than Bloodbath. Following the release of Athanatos, a debate arose within the community about which of the two levels is more challenging.
  • Aurorus claimed Athanatos took over 40,000 attempts to verify this level (it is proven that his verification was hacked).

With this, Aurorus also claimed that he planned to re-beat it later, after Thanksgiving, since the verification was 'not recorded properly'. The video he uploaded on his channel was a clip of him beating the level with the noclip hack as a filler.

  • While the verification itself was not recorded, many believed that Aurorus beat Athanatos legitimately since he had completed the level from 14% to 100% (using a start position) before and had a high score of 71%.
    • However, the Official Extreme and Insane Demon Record List states that Athanatos had been hacked, albeit it was labelled as 'possibly hacked' several days later, before it went back to being labelled as 'hacked'.
  • Although the verification was revealed to have been hacked, Athanatos remained rated regardless.
  • Sunix is the first legitimate victor to beat Athanatos in around 8,000 attempts. The second is knobbelboy, which took around 20,000 attempts. BlassCFB is the third person to beat it with 10,576 attempts.
  • A lot of drama had circulated about Athanatos. Exenity gave a copy of it to Sunix and TacoMacho. Aurorus got angry and overreacted by deleting and changing his username and making one of his levels into a free Demon on Exenity's old account. Aurorus received a lot of hate, but the community quickly forgave him. Later, he reached an agreement with Exenity to verify the level.
  • Athanatos used to be above Bloodbath at #1 on the Demonlist. However, as a punishment for hacking, it was moved below Bloodbath. Athanatos has since been moved back above Bloodbath.
  • There is an upcoming remake titled Anemesis, hosted by LimeTime313. It was previously intended to be Top 1-difficulty, but it is currently set to be Top 50-difficulty. It is set to be verified by swiborg.
    • swiborg achieved 64% on 29 October 2023.[1] He has not been playing Anemesis since.
  • There is also an unrated former Top 1 buffed remake called Athanasia, verified by ViRuZ on 24 November 2016, one day before Sunix verified Sonic Wave.
  • Athanatos used to be Brandon Larkin's least favourite level until he found Belloq worse.
  • Athanatos was initially supposed to be the sequel to aftermath.
  • The placement of Requiem on 7 October 2021 pushed Athanatos into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.

Notable completions

  • Rusty is the first person to beat Athanatos on mobile.[2]

Notable fails

  • TigerXero crashed at 96% because he celebrated too early.
