Lonely travel
Lonely travel is a 2.0 Medium Demon level by FunnyGame. It is an art-based, primarily greyscale level that is played at half speed, in which the player traverses various structures and landscapes. Lonely travel was once the longest rated level in the game, at nearly six minutes, and is FunnyGame's longest level. The level is widely considered to be Easy Demon difficulty, with gameplay that remains sub-Demon throughout the six-minute length.
Lonely travel received acclaim for its concept, gameplay, and design, and became one of the most-liked Medium Demons. This level inspired a genre in creating levels dubbed 'Travel' levels, characterized by their central premise of being extremely long, starting with Serponge's Dem Travel.
Description
[edit | edit source]Lonely travel begins with a simple cube section that requires minimal memorization. The level is decorated with gray grass and whiteish-gray pillars in the background. Then, the player enters a relatively easy mini-cube section, where they move on a white platform in sync with the piano notes and must jump over spikes as they go. This part also requires some memorization.
An easy ship segment follows, featuring grayish grass pillars, blocks that sync to the piano notes, and clouds in the background. The first coin is also located here; the player must fly up into a fake wall and then fly down. A somewhat challenging robot section with a few timings is next. However, this part is not that hard when the player knows when to jump or fall. After the robot section, there is an easy, less decorated UFO section, much like the ship segment. Next is a somewhat easy wave section where the player must dodge slowly moving objects. Afterwards, there is a ship segment that generally features the same gameplay mechanics.
Next comes an auto section, followed by a challenging yet brief cube section that requires precise timings and memorization. An easy UFO part comes next, with decorated fake white pillars. An invisible mini portal and trigger exist, which makes the UFO section move back towards the player, effectively making the level move backwards. After that, there is a reasonably difficult memorization ball without the 'backwards' level effect from the previous section. Then comes a robot section with decorations and difficulty, much like the first one. An easy ship segment follows; this time, it has slowly moving obstacles. Next is a long cube section with numerous cloud decorations, decorated blocks, and orbs, which contains a bit of memorization.
Then, the cube's background goes black, and a memorization part appears. A slightly tricky UFO section follows, and precise timing is required to pass it. This part is primarily black in the background. The wave part that follows has the same decorations and obstacles, but it is slightly easier than the UFO part. Another cube part with a moving platform and obstacles to jump over follows, which requires precise timing to avoid.
Finally, after getting past an auto segment, colours emerge in the background. Here, there is a somewhat tricky wave with semi-invisible obstacles that the player has to dodge. A short memorization-based robot part is encountered next. Then, there is a tricky ball part with a dark background and many monsters to avoid. Next is a challenging UFO section, where falling stars pose as hazards. The final ship segment is not difficult, but it requires some decent flying. Then, the credits are displayed in a cube section, followed by a final small spike. If the player crashes into that spike, they will die at 99%, which could be rage-inducing.
User coins
[edit | edit source]- The first coin is located at 13% in the first mini-ship segment. To collect it, the player must fly up into a secret passage and rest against the ceiling.
- The second coin is located at 45% in the mini-robot section. To collect it, immediately after jumping over a double spike, the player must jump up to the edge of a platform with chain decorations and then jump up again.
- Alternatively, the player can fly over this platform and jump right there, but there is a high chance of not having enough time to jump again, and the player might crash into the platform after having collected the coin.
- The third and final coin is located at 76% at the end of the mini-cube section. At this point, three keys will show up above the player. To collect the coin, the player must jump up to collect the first and the third key. The player must avoid collecting the second key to prevent the coin from disappearing.
Gameplay
[edit | edit source]Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Lonely travel was nominated for and achieved 'Best XL Demon' in the Geometry Dash 2.0 Awards.
- Lonely travel was ranked #8 in GDToday's '100 Greatest Levels of All Time' list.
- The original song in the preview was 'The Undertaker's Daughter', but when released, it was changed into the instrumental version of the song.
- The reason for this is possibly copyright issues.
- Despite the huge length and advanced design, FunnyGame managed to respect the former limit of objects of 30,000 without using cheats and glitches.
- Lonely travel is limited not only by its number of objects but also by its time, since 5 minutes and 59 seconds is the longest duration (coupled with the slowest speed) level that could be legitimately made in Update 2.0. The reason was that the level editor did not allow object placements afterwards.
- Lonely travel was downgraded to Insane at some point, but later, it was reverted to a Demon again. It is one of the levels that got downgraded and rated rapidly, along with distorsion by Serponge.
- Lonely travel contains two comments from RobTop: one was to announce a new 2.1 feature, and another when he brought the rating of the level back due to 'players wanting it'.
- Lonely travel is one of the longest Demons in the game.
- Lonely travel is also the longest-rated 2.0 level in the game.
- Lonely travel used to be the longest-rated level in the game, but it was later beaten by Dark Travel, which is 6 minutes and 14 seconds long.
- Lonely travel is also the longest-rated 2.0 level in the game.
- The entirety of Lonely travel is at half speed.
- There is a bug at around 40% in the dual-ball part. When the player clicks, the spike will not become fake; thus, they will be killed. EricVanWilderman and Brandon Larkin have done this.
- This bug can be corrected, however, if caught quickly enough. By clicking before hitting the row of spikes, they should cycle to disappear as they normally should. Be warned that the time between the click before the spikes and the crash that would occur due to the bug is less than half a second.
- This bug can also usually be averted altogether by hitting the orb near the centre; however, this is only a guideline, and the bug could still occur.

- Serponge created his version called Dem Travel, which is also nearly six minutes long and has many effects.
- After beating Lonely travel, if the player stays long enough and does not return to the menu, they will find an Easter egg. A giant text message reading 'BUNNYGAME' will appear from the left side of the screen and continue moving to the right.
- Going into the editor towards the end credits (not in preview mode) will show an arrow pointing to FunnyGame's name that says 'ugly'.
- The smiley face in the credits (not in preview mode) can be seen as a frowning face.
- Lonely travel was thought to have beaten Dem Travel in length by only a second. The two levels are the same length.
- Lonely travel utilizes a concept where if the player changes gravity, some real spikes become fake and vice versa.
- FunnyGame also uses this concept in his part in an Extreme Demon mega-collaboration, hosted by Riot and Viprin named Yatagarasu.
- This concept may have inspired RobTop to add the touch trigger in 2.1, a toggle trigger that activates when a click is executed.
- Lonely travel was upgraded to Medium Demon many times, and has later been, more rarely, downgraded to Easy Demon.
- If the player crashes into the small spike at 99%, the smiley face will turn into a frowning face.
Notable fails
- EricVanWilderman crashed at 92%, right before the pyramid segment.
