Thanatophobia is a 2.1 Insane Demon mega-collaboration hosted by ARtu, verified by Syndrome and published on 16 July 2020.[1] The level follows a dark, creepy horror theme, which matches the song. It is known for its heavily debated difficulty, with some players considering it to be a very difficult Insane Demon and others calling it an easy Extreme Demon.

History

[edit | edit source]

The first preview of Thanatophobia premiered on YouTube on 1 January 2020.[2] This preview showed the completed layout, created by ARtu and hyp3rlink. Zipixbox, Kains, swiborg, LinkLpiS, Marwec, Water667, Andr1x, and Enrix playtested the level.[3] ARtu showed the second preview of this level on 2 May 2020. This level was in the works for about six months and was verified on 17 July 2020.

Description

[edit | edit source]

The decorators are listed alongside the percentage completion. ARtu made the gameplay of the first ship and the drop. The gameplay of the pre-drop after the first ship was made by hyp3rlink.

  • 0-9% (Kains): Thanatophobia begins with a half-speed ship sequence. It is dark, and the eerie adventure begins. There are size portals that change the player's size with the beat of the music. The player briefly turns into a dot while flying as a mini-ship at 3%, then speeds up to normal speed at 4%, and this pattern continues. At 8%, the words 'Kains' appear, and then the player turns into a dot again, now as an upside-down mini-ship at 9%.
  • 9-24% (Maitnary): The player then becomes a mini-cube and must hit two orbs, green and yellow. Following this, the player must hit a blue orb to go upside down. A red orb is next, and some generally consider this to be the 'hardest timing'. The player must then hit a green orb and a black orb, followed by a blue orb, and perform a precise jump at 13%. After the jump at 13%, the player must hold down a green dash orb. Afterwards, a quick robot sequence follows, where the player must hit a black orb and then make a small jump to a pink dash orb, which continues with another black orb. Afterwards, there are robot and cube jumps indicated by arrows. Next is a UFO sequence with the following inputs timed to the music: a blue orb, a red orb, a normal input, a pink orb, a yellow gravity portal, and then a green orb to lead into a ball section with another pink dash orb.
  • 24-39% (guleshelt): After Maitnary's part comes guleshelt's part. This part begins with a cube sequence featuring a pink dash orb and a pink orb, followed by a spider sequence and a quick UFO sequence in which the player must hit a green orb. The player then becomes a robot and must jump and hit a green orb. The player enters a brief ball sequence leading into two orbs, a yellow one and a black one, as a ship. Afterwards, the player must hit a green orb as a robot while the text flashes 'GILES' in a quick auto sequence; then they must hit a pink orb and another green dash orb. There is a ball portal in which the player must buffer a green orb, followed by a black orb, after which the player must perform a few spider timings. A UFO sequence follows, in which the player must hit a yellow orb and a black orb to the beat. Afterwards, the player turns into a robot and must hit two blue orbs, one red orb, and one green orb, all to the beat. A quick cube black orb input, a very tight red orb timing as a ball, and a final spider timing follow. This part ends with a quick three-click ship sequence: two clicks to avoid hitting the spikes, and the last one to hold. There is a quick auto sequence to finish off.
  • 39-44% (Chaeyeon): This part slows down. The player must first perform a precise jump, then a green orb. Afterwards, the player must hold a pink dash orb, and a glow effect covers the path. The player must then make a quick jump into another pink dash orb, then into a blue pad and a blue orb. The player briefly enters a tight upside-down ship sequence. This part ends with the player having to hold a green dash orb.
  • 44-54% (RealVet): The drop begins with a ship sequence that requires flying upwards and then hitting a black orb. The player then must hold at the mini-portal and hold into the UFO at 47%. Afterwards, the player must click to the beat as the UFO passes through a gravity portal and then another green orb. The player becomes large, then must jump twice. Then the player must hit a black orb and enter a quick mini-ship sequence before becoming a UFO again. The player must reverse gravity, click twice, become mini, flip again, and then click twice again. After that, the player becomes a mini-cube and must hit a yellow orb to land on a platform, then hit a green orb to the right of it to transition to the next part. Visually speaking, RealVet's part features hands that try to 'grab' the player, and 'spiders' in the background add spookiness to the part.
  • 54-65% (Voltex): The player bounces into a ship sequence that requires flying into a ball portal. The green orb right after is heavily dependent on the player's alignment when entering the ball portal. The background is a spooky night scene with many trees. Flying towards the centre results in two ball timings. These two timings are arguably the hardest in the level as they are super precise. Performing these timings correctly will lead to a quick spam at 57%, followed by a mini-cube sequence with a yellow orb. The player then must time a green orb and hold it into the next mini-ship sequence. Next is a quick gravity switch, followed by a pink dash orb, and then a manoeuvre into a UFO sequence in which the player must click to the beat. There are three jumps: two timed jumps and one green orb. The part ends with a red orb timing into a blue pad in a block and a green orb timing as a cube.
  • 65-75% (Zipixbox): Zipixbox's part begins with one UFO click and then a brief one-spike gap straight-fly as a ship. After this gap, the player must hit a yellow orb and then a green orb. It brings the player into a mini-ball with tight timings and a precise blue orb timing. After the blue orb, a pink orb follows, then a normal-size portal. As a ball, the player must do a relatively tight timing, then another pink orb, leading to a tight ship sequence at 70%. The player becomes mini through a one-block corridor and then hits a yellow orb inside a robot portal. In this robot sequence, the player must make a small jump to hit a pink dash orb, then another pink pad. The player must make a final yellow orb jump, then a black orb timing inside a cube portal. After that, a late green orb enters a mini portal that carries the player to the final gameplay section.
  • 75-86% (itami): This part begins with a quadruple-speed ship, and the player must hold into a normal-size portal and let go. Afterwards, the player must hit the second yellow orb as high as possible. Text appears saying 'Pain', 'blood', and 'die'. The player must hit a black orb, which leads into a UFO sequence where they must jump and very quickly hit a black orb. The player must make a quick jump and then enter the final robot sequence with a tight jump. Next, the player enters a quick ship sequence with 'bats' and then a tight corridor. The player must hit a black orb, make a tight jump, and time the jump precisely between two spikes. Finally, the player must hold a green dash orb into a pink pad with an invisible normal-size portal, hit a green orb, and then hold the final pink dash orb, which leads to the end screen.
  • 86-100% (NaimNaro + guleshelt): The level ends with the player going into an auto part. It starts with a girl holding a sword in a dark forest with a monster in the background. The monster figure gets closer to the girl, and her sword slowly rises with the beat of the music. Afterwards, very detailed art of a dark forest appears in the background, and then the level ends with the eerie forest as the end screen.
