Tunnel of Despair is a 2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration level by Exen and ivyteal, verified by Zoink on 7 June 2023.[1] Known for its challenging timings and an infamously lengthy wave section, the level features a greyscale theme accented by pulsing red during song drops. It was initially aimed to top the Demonlist, but Zoink eventually verified it in a nerfed state after about 12,000 attempts.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Note: Exen created the gameplay, while ivyteal decorated the level.

  • 0-9%: Tunnel of Despair begins with a cube section at half speed, with many size and gravity changes. It accelerates to normal speed at the song's beats, then slows again. This part ends with a mini-cube, where the player must hit a toggle orb to remove a saw blocking their path, then accelerate to double speed and enter the next part.
  • 9-19%: This part begins with a half-speed mini-spider section containing tight timings, including orbs and pads. The player becomes normal-sized and then a ball at 14%, becoming mini and performing many of the same timings as the spider.
  • 19-24%: The player becomes a UFO and accelerates to normal speed. Again, many orb timings and size switches follow as the player navigates the claustrophobic space.
  • 24-31%: A robot at double speed begins this section. Size changes, orb timings and more tight spaces are used here. It accelerates to triple speed and briefly becomes a ship, slowing down to half speed and going through a small straight-fly. There is a brief pause before the drop begins.
  • 31-63%: The drop begins with a quadruple-speed mini-wave. This section prominently uses size and gravity changes, D-blocks, fake spikes and tough timings. There is a small pause between the song's drops, where the player slows to half speed before being thrown back into quadruple speed. The player briefly becomes a cube three times during these pauses, then becomes a wave again.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Tunnel of Despair was rated on 1 September 2023 and placed at #17 on the Demonlist on 30 September 2023, above arcturus and below The Hallucination.
    • This addition pushed Asterios into the Extended List and Shmarley Ville into the Legacy List.
  • Tunnel of Despair was initially underrated on the Demonlist, largely relying on Zoink's opinion that it was around Top 20 difficulty. However, as more players completed it, they disagreed, finding it much harder. Over the next year, its difficulty ranking surged from #20 to #5 at its peak.
  • wPopoff reported Tunnel of Despair after he completed it. He was the first victor, beating the level nine months after Zoink.
  • There is an upcoming reimagination/remake of Tunnel of Despair called Tunnel of Serpent, named after its current verifier, Serpentical, whose best progress on the level is 60% and 21-100%.[2][3]
  • The placement of Every End on 20 April 2025 pushed Tunnel of Despair out of the Top 10 on the Demonlist, alongside the former Top 1s being pushed out of the lists, with Zodiac into the Extended List, and Bloodlust into the Legacy List.
    • The placement of ORBIT on 10 March 2026 pushed Tunnel of Despair out of the Top 20, alongside another two former Top 1s: Tartarus into the Extended List and Crimson Planet into the Legacy List.
