Nine Circles Levels

Nine Circles levels are remake levels based on Zobros's Demon level Nine Circles published during Update 1.9, centred on fast wave segments with a strobing effect. They remain one of the most popular level trends to date. These levels commonly use dubstep, electro, or dance music, particularly tracks by composers such as NIGHTkilla (Rukkus) and Xtrullor, and typically feature varying colours, decorations, and difficulties.
The wave segments usually coincide with the song's drop. These sections exhibit a sharp difficulty spike, with flashing backgrounds, hazards, and triangular obstacles that strobe in ordered patterns (termed the 'Circles effect'). Occasionally, the effect is applied to non-wave game modes, as seen in levels like The Realistic or Bausha Vortex.
Several Nine Circles levels, including Sonic Wave (and its remakes) and Sakupen Circles, were once ranked among the hardest levels in Geometry Dash. The current hardest Nine Circles level in the game according to the Demonlist is Antarctic Lights.
Overview
[edit | edit source]In early 2015, Zobros published the Hard Demon level Nine Circles, his first original level. This level stunned the Geometry Dash community and quickly gained widespread popularity. In late February of that year, the then-unknown player SuperPizzaLuigi (now known as mkComic) released a remake of the level, featuring purple colours and a new NIGHTkilla song titled Fairydust. By late April, creators Softable and the well-known ZenthicAlpha had replicated Nine Circles with their own iterations, The Realistic and Jawbreaker, respectively.
Between May and August, dozens of such levels emerged, created by both established creators (e.g., Glittershroom, Dhafin, Andromeda, and Minesap) and previously unknown designers who rose to prominence through their Nine Circles remakes, such as CrisPy Dash, Artimiel, RedUniverse, and N1XO. The trend waned after Update 2.0, as RobTop (the game's developer) largely stopped awarding star ratings to classic-style Nine Circles remakes, except in rare cases. This change prompted creators to experiment with new designs, leading to the 2.0 generation of Nine Circles levels, including Retro Circles, Circulatum, AnotherCircles, and Ultimate Circles.
Creators such as Rulas and Rustam later developed even more challenging variants, including Ultra Circles and XII Circles, the latter being particularly difficult to replicate. By 2016, very few remakes earned featured status, and Zobros himself acknowledged the trend's oversaturation. RobTop subsequently assured him that new Nine Circles levels would likely not receive official ratings. This shift inspired the 2.1-style Nine Circles era, exemplified by levels such as pulsar, Nine CircleX, Zacarias, Tenth Circle, and Cosmic Cyclone.
What is a Nine Circles level
[edit | edit source]The following criteria provide a general classification for star-rated levels designated as 'Nine Circles' levels, characterised by recurring patterns observed across historically accepted variations. These guidelines aim to differentiate true Nine Circles levels from 'Nine Circles-themed' levels using analytical and statistical data. Only star-rated levels are recognised, as RobTop uses this system to denote quality and 'worth recognising'.
Level structure
[edit | edit source]- The wave game-mode must be active for greater than 25% of a star-rated level for it to be considered a Nine Circles level: Wave gameplay is central to Nine Circles levels. The average wave usage in rated levels is 50.5%, but the 25% threshold ensures creative flexibility. This threshold derives from psychological studies indicating that humans recognise prominence when an element ranks among the 'Top 3' in a category (e.g., Olympic podium rankings). Thus, the wave must occupy at least 25% of gameplay to qualify as a 'Top 3' game-mode.

- The level must not begin with the wave game-mode: All rated Nine Circles Demons feature a non-wave introduction, typically synced to a musical buildup preceding the drop. Analysis confirms that no rated Nine Circles Demon begins with wave gameplay. However, the closest level to being a Nine Circles Demon that starts with wave is Ashley Wave Trials. According to moderators in the Nine Circles Demon List, the start-with-wave criteria is non-negotiable, and if it starts with the wave, it will never be on the Nine Circles Demon List.
Decoration
[edit | edit source]- Diamond block structuring must account for AT LEAST 50% of the decoration style while the wave game-mode is active: All current Nine Circles Demons use diamond blocks to form wave corridors. These blocks are angled at 45° or 60° to align with standard or mini-wave trajectories. Unlike levels like ZAPHKIEL, where wave corridors use angled lines but lack diamond blocks. Nine Circles structuring requires diamond blocks to extend fully to level boundaries (floor/ceiling). Compared to non-diamond structuring styles:
- Spike and pillar structuring: Uses spikes and vertical pillars, found during sections 28% to 35% of The Golden and 23% to 34% of Hatred.
- Slanted pillar structuring: Uses diagonally aligned pillars, found during sections 61% to 87% of Cold Sweat and 6% to 15%, 75% to 84% of Cataclysm.
- Rectangular block structuring: Relies on rectangular blocks with slanted corridor lines, found in all wave sections of ZAPHKIEL and 63 to 67% of Slaughterhouse.
- The concentric flashing effect appears on the surrounding structuring for at least 50% of the time that the wave game-mode is active: Concentric flashing is explained as follows:

- Figure 1 shows five circles all with the same centre but different sizes. Concentric is defined as 'of or denoting circles, arcs, or other shapes which share the same centre, the larger often completely surrounding the smaller.' In this formation, bars of space are created between the circles.
- Figure 2 shows concentric diamonds in the 1.9 Nine Circles style.
- Figure 3 details the following sequence:
- Bars 1–4 cycle ON/OFF in order (1→2→3→4→1…).
- Flashing can reverse (4→3→2→1→4…).
- The pattern must flow repetitively inward (OUT→IN) or outward (IN→OUT).
- All rated Nine Circles levels include this effect.
The flashing can occur in the opposite direction, with bar 4 flashing first and bar 1 last. The flashing on the object must have a repetitive IN-to-OUT or OUT-to-IN direction, with OUT being the outer edge of the block and IN being the centre of the block. The concentric flashing does NOT need to cover the entire structure (e.g. Super Mario Wave or Cat Planet). Each current-rated Nine Circles level features this effect.

Nine Circles 'extras'
[edit | edit source]According to the Nine Circles Demon List, which strictly follows the criteria as described in detail on the fandom list, Nine Circles 'Extras' are a replacement for the old 'exceptions' section on the wiki. This list is intended to accommodate levels considered Nine Circles by many, but it does not recognise them as such. The rules for this 'extras' list have occasionally changed, causing levels to get added and removed. This list currently includes levels that meet 4/5 criteria, as long as they are still star rated and are at least 15% wave game-mode.
For a player attempting to beat every Nine Circles Demon and to be recognised by this page, these demons are recommended, but not required.

Complete victors
[edit | edit source]- Riot completed the Nine Circles series when there were 23 Demons, with his completion of Crimson Clutter on 18 August 2015.
- Many believe that he missed Headrush, but it was eventually discovered that Headrush was not rated until 25 August.
- TigerXero completed the Nine Circles series when there were 57 Demons, on 2 August 2017.
- Kevelia completed the Nine Circles series when there were 57 Demons, after beating Circles Evolution (considered a Nine Circles level at the time), on 18 September 2017.
- iNeo became the fourth victor on 3 February 2019, after beating Power, though many of their completions were not recorded, thus lacking prominent evidence.
- Wity completed the Nine Circles series when there were 133 Demons, after beating The Hallucination on 19 January 2025. He was also able to keep the entire series completed up until there were 139 Demons.
- Wity also became the first victor of all of the extras, after beating Indivine on 8 June 2025. He is also the only person verified to have completed the entire series, including non-Demon levels.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Before Update 2.0, triple sawblades had an outline in the third sawblade, making it look like it had four sawblades. (If the OBJ had 1.00 opacity.)
- It is still possible to make these sawblades after Update 2.0 via colour blending.
- There are nine rated Sonic Wave remakes or sequels: If Sonic Wave was L1, Sonic Wave Infinity, Sonic Wave Rebirth, Generic Wave, Redemption, Cosmic Cyclone, Super Mario Wave, Sonic Wave Unlimited, and Sonic Wave Universe.
- Additionally, there is one rated Sonic Wave remake that is considered a Nine Circles 'Extra': Auditory Breaker. This consideration brings the total amount of rated Sonic Wave levels to 10.
- Out of all the Nine Circles levels, sixteen have an Epic rating: pulsar, Nine CircleX, Nine Paws, Tenth Circle, Sonic Wave Rebirth, ACCELERATOR, FIREPOWER, Solar Flare, Haywire, Psychedelic Circles, Nomostros Cosmos, Ring Trick, Bangarang, Axiom Asterism, Sinister Glow, and Tung Tung Sahurcles. No non-Demon Nine Circles levels have an Epic rating, and no Nine Circles levels have a Legendary or Mythic rating.
- Including extras, there are also ABEL, Neliswave, and Indivine, bringing the total up to nineteen.
- Sonic Wave and Sakupen Circles are the only former Top 1s that are Nine Circles levels, although Sakupen Circles retrospectively should not have held the spot.
- Based on modern-day difficulty ratings, Sonic Wave Infinity should have also been a Top 1, as it was later moved above the level that was Top 1 at the time it was placed (Tartarus).
- SonicBath was also considered the hardest legitimately beaten level at the time it was verified, but it has never been rated.
- Arctic Lights was unintentionally placed as a Top 1 on the Demonlist on 27 May 2022, for less than an hour.
- The most-liked and most-downloaded Nine Circles level is the original Nine Circles, with 109M downloads and 3.9 million likes as of 5 July 2026.
- The most-disliked Nine Circles level is the unrated level Fluxed Circles by DryCryCrxstal, with 9,500 dislikes as of 5 July 2025. There are no rated Nine Circles levels in the dislike ratio.
- Sonic Wave Unlimited features what is considered the most difficult user coin in Geometry Dash.
- In late Update 1.9, RobTop gave several Demon-difficulty Nine Circles levels Insane ratings in an attempt to stop players from making them. This action happened to classical, Evil, Figures, and Sine Wavs.
- Evil was later unrated due to being made free, while Figures and Sine Wavs were later re-rated to Demon. However, RobTop seems to have forgotten to re-rate classical, which remains as one of the hardest Insane levels to this day.
- Four Nine Circles levels were re-rated after being unrated:
- sharp was originally unrated due to having the 'tiny bug', but it was re-rated in 2021.
- Planet Circles was originally unrated because the creator was accused of hack-verifying the level, but it was re-rated in 2022.
- Frozen Jawbreaker was originally unrated due to being hack-verified, but it was re-rated in 2022.
- Sonic Wave Infinity was originally unrated due to containing a crash trigger, but it was re-rated the next day.
- Three Nine Circles levels have had their names changed:
- Nine Circles was originally capitalised 'Nine circles', but RobTop manually changed it.
- Problematic was originally capitalised 'problematic', but RobTop manually changed it.
- dorabaebasic10 was originally 'dorabae-basic10', but hyphens were purged from rated levels in 2015.
- Seven Nine Circles levels have been the Daily Level:
- Nine Circles, made Daily as a joke by RobTop on 1 April 2020 - one of only two Demons to have ever been a Daily Level (#1,215).
