Cognition is a 2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration level by EndLevel and Benji8080, verified by nSwish on 28 September 2019.[1][2] It is known for having tight timings, despite being only a minute long. However, Cognition was received positively by most of the community, being one of the most popular levels to complete during its time on the Demonlist.
An official sequel, Oblivion, was hosted by Benji8080 and verified by dice88 on 5 July 2021.[3] Oblivion itself has a sequel called Blossom, but the level has not been decorated yet.
Description
[edit | edit source]- 0-21%: Cognition begins with the player already having to do ridiculous timings, while the portals and orbs are invisible. These timings are difficult and tight. Then a short ball section appears with similar timings. After this, another cube section appears, with the same timings as previously. Then, a difficult ship section comes, consisting of very tight straight-flying. Eventually, the ship slows down, and the screen darkens. Then, the next section comes.
- 21-52%: This section is at triple-speed, extremely spammy and precise. Many different game-mode portals fly at the player, requiring them to perform difficult, quick timings. Once the section has reached its halfway point, a passive yet tight wave section emerges, drawing the player into the second half of this section. The second half contains some extreme duals and some tight waves. At the end of this section, there is another short wave segment.
- 52-73%: The speed has now slowed to normal speed, but the timings are still incredibly difficult. This part begins with a cube section before turning into a UFO with peculiar timings and click patterns. After this, the speed slows down to half with another cube section. Following this is a ship section, with some very tight straight-fly. It is widely considered the easiest section of the level.
- 73-100%: This part is slightly easier than 22-52%. It is very similar to it but at double speed. This part is the most out of sync of the whole level. The first half is similar to 22-52%, and the second half is as well, although having a bit of dual-action.

Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Cognition was rated on 18 December 2019 and placed at #3 on the Demonlist on 21 January 2020, above Crimson Planet and below Kenos.
- This addition pushed Bloodlust out of the Top 5, Artificial Ascent out of the Top 50, Athanatos into the Extended List, and Glide into the Legacy List, three of which are former Top 1 Demons.
- EndLevel and LexyCat teamed up with lolwut, a popular player and creator, to create Flyleaf, an unofficial sequel layout.[4]
- The song for Cognition, 'Violence', was removed from Newgrounds due to containing copyrighted samples.
- According to Gablor, Cognition is not inspired by kowareta; it came from Gablor making gameplay with the song 'Violence', with Benji8080 liking the song and wanting to use it as well. Its former name, kowarinnards, a portmanteau of the levels kowareta and INNARDS, was possibly chosen because those levels were closely related, and it would grab people's interest in the project.[5]
- Cognition was in EricVanWilderman's 12 Demons of Christmas 2023 Community Series, as Demon #11, being completed by AeonAir.[6]
- The placement of Levigo on 25 February 2026 pushed Cognition into the Legacy List of the Demonlist after over six years.
- Cognition amassed 1,232 total victors during its lifespan on the Demonlist, making it the fourth level in the history of Pointercrate to reach a milestone of 1,000 victors, alongside Bloodbath (1,294), Sonic Wave (1,048), Bloodlust (1,068), and Zodiac (1,020).
Notable completions
- Joshua28 became the first player to complete Cognition on a controller on 22 July 2020.[7]
- Skarro became the second on 20 March 2021,[8] and 12_Kelvin the third on 23 May 2021.
- Llqne completed Cognition as a jump from Deadlocked.[9]
