kowareta (Japanese: 壊れた; lit. broken; formerly known as Gumi) is a 2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration level by Gablor, EndLevel, and Minaxa, verified and published by Gablor.[1] It is Medium-length—only 49 seconds long—but still incredibly difficult. It was rated on 23 August 2019 and remained rated for nine hours before being unrated due to hatred and controversy. However, the next day, it was rated again, though only with a star rating.

Description

[edit | edit source]

kowareta begins with a super precise green orb timing, which the player can skip following the new update. In addition, this part of the level is at double speed and has gravity portals that can confuse the player. After a few seconds, the speed slows, the music calms down, and the player enters a ship sequence with a tight space and several orbs.

After that, the music becomes more intense, the next mini-cube also has a dash orb, and the timings become harder. Next is a short mini-ball with timings, then a cube that changes size, and finally a difficult ship that shrinks.

After that, the player must prepare for the drop. Due to the level's compact gameplay, it is sometimes considered more difficult than Bloodlust. Narrow parts, hard timings and unstable speed signify its tremendous complexity. This extreme part begins as a cube, a mini-ship with a narrow space, a very tight mini-wave with many portals that switch the player's gravity and a ship with hard timings and straight-flying. The complexity does not decrease, and later the player awaits a very difficult swing copter, a dual-spider, and a cube that will turn into a ship. After that, there is another cube with timings like in Plasma Pulse Finale and a narrow passage to a UFO.

Later, the player waits for difficult timings in some ship sequences alongside a UFO. Then, the player encounters a wave that will change size at some point, an extreme cube section along with straight-flying as a ship, before a final cube section along with straight-flying, after which the level will drop in intensity. There is a quick, minor yellow orb timing before the level ends.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • kowareta was rated on 23 August 2019 and placed at #6 on the Demonlist on 23 August 2019, above Arctic Lights and below Lucid Nightmares.
    • This addition pushed Phobos into the Extended List and Underground into the Legacy List.
  • kowareta received an honourable mention in Geometry Dash Today's list of 'The Top 100 Greatest Geometry Dash Levels Of All Time'.
  • The Japanese translation of kowareta (壊れた), 'broken', is based on the song name, 'Fragile'.
  • Crazen uploaded a copy of kowareta that he verified himself, taking him 26,771 attempts.
  • Originally, Minaxa's part was darker and flashing throughout, which, according to some people, made it slightly more annoying. This part was present in the original version that Gablor verified off-stream, but it was altered for the 'official' version Gablor verified a few months later.
  • kowareta used to be the hardest level beaten on 60Hz, being lappwv, only to be beaten by Lavaclaw's 60Hz completion on Aronia a month later.
  • kowareta was the hardest level beaten on mobile, and Zentel set the record with 55,000 attempts.[2] The previous record was Bloodbath, set by Bigthunder556.[3] However, Zentel beat this on 120Hz, as doing the first input without skipping is not possible on 60Hz. Since he beat it on 120Hz, the old mobile list did not accept his record, but a new list did.
  • kowareta used to be the shortest-rated Extreme Demon, at 49 seconds, but it was surpassed by Caution, an Extreme Demon verified by Zeronium that is 41 seconds long, eight seconds shorter than kowareta.
  • kowareta has an official sequel called shibireta, verified by lolwut on 15 December 2019.[4] There are a lot of other remakes of this level, such as:
    • Fragile, hosted by EndLevel and verified by vaen. It is a buffed, redecorated combination of kowareta and shibireta in one level.
    • Gumi (the original name of kowareta), decorated by LISP and verified by Swooker. It is the original, unnerfed version of kowareta with cyberpunk-themed decoration.
      • The name 'Gumi' was named after the VOCALOID voice bank Gumi, which was the voice for the original 'Fragile' song.[5]
      • This level is not the true 'unnerfed' version of kowareta, as it contains several fixes and rebalance changes to the gameplay.[6] The original unnerfed version has been verified by Lukasta on 31 July 2026.[7]
    • Shiranai, hosted by Zentraa and verified by vaen. It has similar gameplay, with more detailed, brighter decorations.
    • Sakureta, created and decorated by Team Ξ XI.[8]
  • kowareta was the hardest level to be beaten on a controller, which Brandon Larkin beat, only to be beaten by Cognition, after Joshua28 completed it.
  • kowareta got decently popularised through massive jumps, such as lamp86 jumping from Bloodbath, Franzy jumping from Prismatic Haze, and a Thai player named Air jumping massively from Deadlocked as his first ever user level.
  • The placement of Checked Steam on 25 August 2024 pushed kowareta into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.
